The Department of Lettere et culture moderne of « La Sapienza » Università di Roma is co-organizing a summer school with the Departments of Italian Studies and of History on 8-9 July at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Aix-Marseille University in Aix-en-Provence (Schuman campus).
The summer school anticipates on the creation of SapiAMU, a joint Master’s Degree for historians and specialists of Italian studies. Its main theme is The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony. European Renaissance and its Reception (see programme). All doctoral students of the CIVIS consortium are welcome (registration is now closed for La Sapienza and Aix-Marseille University).
The workshop focuses on the interactions between politics and religion on the one hand, and literary and artistic production on the other, in Renaissance Europe. Our questioning will centre on the reception of these notions in historiography and literary criticism as well as in the imagination of the Modern Period. One important aspect of the proceedings will consist in an open dialogue on the formation of European ruling elites in the early Modern Period and on the role played by the courts and nobility in the process. Our privileged themes span a broad spectrum, some central questions will be tackled from a diachronic and transdisciplinary perspective. One lecture will be devoted to the place of books in the European cultural tradition, as well as to literary prizes, the publishing galaxy in contemporary Italy, and the future of books in the digital age. The keynote speaker is Professor Giovanni Solimine , President of the “Strega” literary prize and Director of Dipartimento di Lettere e Culture modern, « La Sapienza », University of Rome.
Papers will be delivered in French, Italian and English.
