This course aims to achieve two objectives:
- Firstly, to strengthen the network of doctoral students whose research revolves around themes related to 'Cities, Territories, and Mobilities' in the CIVIS community.
- Secondly, to enhance the doctoral students' learning experience by fostering a framework of mentoring and idea exchange.
To accomplish these objectives, the course has been structured into two parts: an initial virtual segment, dedicated to exploring methodologies and tools for developing a doctoral thesis; followed by a second segment held in person at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where students will have the opportunity to present their projects and discuss the research challenges they encounter.
Main topics addressed
This project is configured as a transversal training activity at doctoral studies level which can help Phd. students to:
- Foster and establish international research networks within CIVIS among PhD students focusing on similar topics
- Enhance PhD students' communication skills to disseminate research progress effectively
- Disseminate the findings of doctoral research beyond individual universities
- Contribute to the qualitative enhancement of their studies by engaging in critical discourse within the CIVIS scientific community
- Acquire additional techniques, approaches, concepts, and ideas through debate with other PhD students and CIVIS staff
Learning outcomes
The anticipated learning outcomes include:
- Facilitate the assembly of doctoral students across CIVIS universities
- Establish international teaching-learning networks among CIVIS universities
- Foster and create international research networks within CIVIS among PhD students exploring similar topics
- Enhance Ph.D. students' communication skills to disseminate research progress effectively
- Explore various techniques, approaches, concepts, and ideas through debates with other Ph.D. students and CIVIS staff
- Investigate the potential for initiating joint doctoral programs among CIVIS universities associated with CIVIS Hub 4.

Physical mobility
17 - 21 February 2025
The meeting in Madrid will provide students the opportunity to share their research with other PhD students. This collaboration will enhance cooperation and open the possibility to strengthen networks addressing common challenges across different countries and societies. In addition to networking, they will develop their communication skills by presenting their research in an international environment. Finally, they will receive feedback not only from other students but also from professors and invited organizations.
Virtual part
4 October 2024 - 7 February 2025
The virtual component will consist of a series of webinars led by participating professors. These seminars aim to enrich students' doctoral learning experiences by delving into specific aspects. Students will explore new methodologies (qualitative, quantitative, fieldwork, etc.), master techniques for graphic and oral research presentations, and learn to utilize specific databases, among other topics.
Requirements
The course is open to Master's and Ph.D. students at CIVIS member universities. Students will need to be enrolled in PhD programmes (urbanism, geography, landscape, cities, mobility, environment, architecture, urban tourism, sustainability, transport, urban governance, urban culture, ...) in their universities, or intend to do so in the near future.
Participants should have a B2 level of English.
NB: Visiting Students - Erasmus Funding Eligibility

Assessment
There are two main assessment methods foreseen in the course:
- Virtual component: submission and approval of assignments. In each webinar there will be a task (webinar summary, open questions, questionnaire, etc.) that will have to be solved by the students.
- Physical component: Elaboration and presentation of a research project, with special emphasis on the improvements made following participation in the virtual seminars
Blended Intensive Programme
This CIVIS course is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP): a new format of Erasmus+ mobility which combines online teaching with a short trip to another campus to learn alongside students and professors across Europe. Click here to learn more about CIVIS BIPs.
