About the course
This short-term course is organised in 4 seminar workshops on the interdisciplinary area of multilingualism and language policy.
The course aims to:
- Raise awareness on the relevance of languages in social processes, attitudes, our daily lives, and in the construction of CIVIS
- Inform about language policies within the consortium
Main topics addressed
- Introduction to the notions of multilingualism/plurilingualism and to perspectives of multilingualism studies
- Multilingualism in the EU: policies and practices
- Linguistic social justice and social ex-/inclusion: Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa
- Multilingualism and education
Learning outcomes
Upon completion, participants will have:
- Developed an understanding of the social and political implications of multilingual communication
- Identified possibilities for pursuing studies in multilingualism within CIVIS
- Developed critical language awareness and a disposition for intercultural communication
- Become agents in the collaborative production of knowledge and the promotion of diversity within CIVIS

This short term course is organised in 4 online lectures of 2 hours, for a total of 8 hours. The lectures will be held on the following dates:
- 16 November 2021
- 25 January 2022
- 9 March 2022
- 9 May 2022
Requirements
Applicants should be Master's or PhD students at one of the CIVIS member universities.
Applicants should be enrolled or have a strong interest in the following fields of studies: Linguistics, Languages, Sociology of Languages, Linguistic Anthropology.

Assessment
The aim of this short term course is to ensure students' engagement. After the courses, participants will be asked to voluntarily perform some tasks (such as readings) to document the language diversity of CIVIS' campuses and to fill in a feedback form, but there will be no assessment. References for further readings will be posted in Moodle to complement the sessions.

Laura ALVAREZ
Laura Álvarez López holds a position as Full Professor of Portuguese at Stockholm University. Her sociolinguistic research focuses on varieties of Portuguese and Spanish and aims to study linguistic and social factors that influence language variation and change in intercultural and multilingual settings in both Africa and Latin America.
Rea DELVEROUDI
Rea Delveroudi is Professor of General Linguistics and History of Linguistic Ideas at the Department of French Language and Literature, and a member of the scientific committee of the Centre of Excellence for Multilingualism and Language Policy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her research interests include Greek, French and contrastive linguistics, enunciation, language contact, history of linguistics and linguistic ideas in Greece, language policies, multilingualism and intercomprehension strategies.
Bessie DENDRINOS
Bessie Dendrinos is Professor Emerita of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She also is the Director of the Research Centre for Language Teaching and Assessment of the Department of English, the Head of the Scientific Committee of the NKUA Centre of Excellence for Multilingualism and Language Policy, and President of the Examination Board of the KPG multilingual examination suite. She is also president of the European Civil Society Platform for Multilingualism.
Christina HEDMAN
Christina Hedman is a Full Professor in Swedish as a Second Language in the Department of Language Education at the Stockholm University. She holds a PhD in Research on Bilingualism and her research encompasses language and literacy development and use among multilingual children and adolescents from an educational perspective, as well as in critical policy perspectives.
Evdokia KARAVAS
Evdokia Karavas is a Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Department of English Language and Literature, Deputy Director of the Research Centre for Language Teaching, Testing and Assessment (RCeL) and a member of the scientific committee of the Centre of Excellence for Multilingualism and Language Policy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Responsible for initial teacher training and professional development programmes, as well FL curriculum development and evaluation, she is also a member of the Examination Board of the KPG multilingual examination suite.
Ana LLINARES
Ana Llinares is a Professor of Applied Linguistics in the English department at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She is the Director of the UAM-CLIL research group and has published widely on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in bilingual/multilingual education contexts at all educational levels (primary, secondary and tertiary). She is co-coordinator of the AILA research network on Content and Language Integrated Learning.
Luisa MARTIN-ROJO
Luisa Martin-Rojo is a Full Professor in Linguistics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Director of the MIRCo Research Center for Multilingualism, Discourse and Communication at UAM, and founding member/former President of Iberian Association for Discourse Studies and Society (EDiSo). Throughout her research trajectory, she has conducted and led research in the fields of discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and communication, focusing on social inequality and sociolinguistic justice.
Clara MOLINA
Clara Molina is a Professor of English Language and Linguistics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Her teaching and research interests involve the overlapping fields of sociolinguistics, language variation and change, multilingualism and identity, language ideologies, sociocognitive semantics and pragmatics, linguistic landscapes, and communication consultancy. She is a member of the MIRCo Research Center for Multilingualism.
Bernadette O’ROURKE
Bernadette O'Rourke is a Professor of Sociolinguistics and Hispanic Studies at the University of Glasgow. Her research sits within the broad area of sociolinguistics and the sociology of language and focuses on the political and social meanings of language and their influence on society. She has specialisms in minority languages, multilingualism, language policy and language ideologies.
Anna TUDELA
Anna Tudela is a visiting lecturer in Linguistics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She holds a PhD in Linguistic Communication and Multilingual Mediation from Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, multilingualism and Catalan as a foreign language. She is a member of MIRCo and SERCLE (Teaching and Research Society of Catalan as a Foreign Language).
