Opening Keynote: AI-powered multilingualism: friend or foe for European Universities?

The Staff Week will open with a high-level keynote panel exploring how AI is reshaping multilingual communication in academia. Featuring expert voices in communication, AI ethics, translation, and practitioners in the field, the session will examine real-world case studies, ethical challenges, and the transformative potential of AI in breaking down language barriers across European University Alliances. The panel will also address the impact of AI on student recruitment, engagement, and the creation of inclusive, multicultural academic communities.

Visit to FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute Centre
  • Explore the CAVE test center
  • Learn from FARI’s communication practitioners and researchers

  • Hands-on: AI and machine learning with ULB’s CeCo·IA

Project Coaching & Wrap-Up

  • Project pitch session – participants present real-life communication challenges
  • Receive tailored feedback from experts and peers

Expected Outcomes

  • 30 university communicators trained in the ethical use of AI.
  • Enhanced multilingual communication strategies across CIVIS institutions.
  • A community of practice ready to share and scale knowledge.
  • A replicable programme model for other European University Alliances.

 

This is an in-person training, taking place in Brussels, from November 25-28, 2025.

Participant funding 

Staff mobility for these events is often supported through Erasmus+ grants. Participants can usually apply for Erasmus+ grants to cover travel and subsistence costs. If Erasmus+ funding is not available, the sending institution must seek for other funding opportunities, such as institutional funding or external funding options. The participation of staff from Associate Member universities is explicitly encouraged. Participation can be funded by available E+ ICM funds of the host institution.

Accommodation is not provided, but organisers may offer recommendations.

 

Who Can Participate?

This Staff Week is open to communication professionals from CIVIS European University Alliance member institutions. You are eligible if:

  • You work in university communications at the central, faculty, or departmental level.
  • You are a member of the CIVIS Communication Unit.
  • A limited number of seats will also be reserved for communicators from other European University Alliances in which Universities of the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles (Belgium) are members.

Your project

When registrations open, you will be asked to submit a one-page motivation statement. This should include:

  • Your interest in the topic of Artificial Intelligence in university communication.
  • A brief description of a real-world task or project you would like to explore during the Staff Week.

One of the key goals of this programme is to provide expert and peer feedback on participants’ projects, helping you apply what you learn directly to your institutional context.
