Learning outcomes
At the end of the school, along a specialized line of the interdisciplinary field of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies, students should be able to:
- Define the fields of Nanoscience
- Distinguish the different techniques used to characterize the chemical and physical properties of nanometric condensed phases of matter
- Understand the relationship between nanoscale and functionalization in interdisciplinary fields
- Analyze the contributions of nanoscale to performances of natural or technological systems
- Identify the main areas of research and development in Nanotechnology Engineering
- Apply ethical concepts to the creation and use of matter at the nanoscale

Physical mobility
The physical mobility part will be running from 19 to 23 June 2023 in Marseille, France.
The physical component of NANOSUM 2023 is a 5-day international summer school. The school will propose a panel of advanced courses at the state of the art, presented as seminars by people from the education teams of the masters from the five universities in the hottest fields of nanosciences and nanotechnologies.
The school NANOSUM also dedicates a half-day to Nanosciences, Environment and Society, including issues related to the role of nanotechnologies in the environmental transition.
Finally, this week will include an entire day dedicated to student professionalisation. The objective of NANOSUM is to promote the autonomy of students toward their professionalisation, by exchanging with actors of industrial sectors. This day will be split into a half-day of seminars given by industrialists, and an afternoon that will take the form of round tables between industrial actors and students who could ask questions, present their ideas, projects...
During this week, periods will be reserved for finalising the open problem activity started remotely. A session of oral presentations is planned during the week, where students will be able to explain the conclusions of their previous remote work, and will have the opportunity to exchange with school speakers and participants.
Important note: housing (accommodation and meals) is arranged by the school, and once selected, students will have to pay the sum of 200 euros for this housing. Selected students will receive a grant to support their travel and stay. Click here to learn more.
Virtual part
The virtual part will be running from 1 May to 26 June 2023.
The virtual component of NANOSUM 2023 constitutes the core of the open problem activity of the school. It will start with a general meeting to form mixed student groups from different universities by lottery, and present the timely research subjects that should have been proposed by school teachers and scientific committee’s members. The mission for each group is to appropriate the state of the art, understand the sticking points, and then to propose a research track to overcome them. Furthermore, they will have to discuss the potential beneficial use to society of the research. Still by groups, students will have to design a societal or industrial project to be developed for overpassing one of the societal challenges related to Digital and Technology Transformation. Student’s groups will have to provide a report on this activity.
Requirements
This course is open to Master and PhD students at CIVIS member universities. Participants should have robust basics in condensed matter physics and/or organic and mineral chemistry and/or biophysics.
A B2 level of English is required.
NB: Visiting Students - Erasmus Funding Eligibility
To be eligible for your selected CIVIS programme, you must be a fully enrolled student at your CIVIS home university at the time you will be undertaking the programme. Click here to learn more about the eligibility criteria.
Application process
Interested students should apply by filling in the online application form by 28 February 2023.
Applicants should provide a detailed CV, a transcripts of marks of the three last semesters (for master’s student) and of the whole master degree (for PhD), and a motivation letter.
The most important criteria will be the coherence the argumentation of the motivation letter about what would be the added value for your project to participate to Nanosum, as well as the excellence of the academic results.
Assessment
- Attendance
- Oral presentation of open problem resolution
- Report on the relationships between the proposed research activities and potential digital transformations
Blended Intensive Programme
This CIVIS course is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP): a new format of Erasmus+ mobility which combines online teaching with a short trip to another campus to learn alongside students and professors across Europe. Click here to learn more about CIVIS BIPs.
