Mission, vision & valeurs

CIVIS is Europe's Civic University Alliance, a long-term endeavour that started in 2019 and brings together 11 European universities and 6 African partner universities, committed to working together to address the challenges of the 21st century. CIVIS is one of the pioneers of the European Universities initiative.

The stakes are high, and the needs pressing for science-based knowledge, skills, and action regarding the environment and climate change, health care, democracy and cultural heritage, sustainable and inclusive mobility, and digital transformations. By deepening our alliance’s structural collaborations, we seek to forge the next generations of engaged European citizens.

CIVISNESS OR HOW TO “COOK” A CIVIS PROJECT

Mission and Vision

Our Mission

CIVIS aims to create a truly unique European interuniversity campus where students, academics, researchers, and staff will move and collaborate as freely as within their home institution. We will develop a deep level of integration, involving joint learning pathways, development of complementary research facilities and diverse degree pathways.

Our Vision

We envision our alliance as a space for innovative and responsible teaching, research, cultural exchanges, and citizen action across Europe and its institutions. Based on the solid and innovative education and scientific activities in each institution, CIVIS will unite efforts and experiences to develop a European University with strong links to local stakeholders and a close attention to global challenges. It will contribute to the social, cultural, and economic dynamism at local and global scale.

Our Goals

  • Share a long-term strategy on education, research, and innovation.
  • Create a European inter-university campus.
  • Design new pedagogical and mobility models.
  • Improve social inclusiveness and geographical balance.
  • Prepare new generations to upcoming changes, with ambitious joint educational programmes at Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral level.
  • Develop research and innovation projects in response to local, regional, and global challenges.
  • Increasing student mobility and intercultural experience.
  • Become a reference in participative, inclusive, civic university.

Our Strategy

A challenge-based approach to fuel our civic, impact-driven alliance. We promote shared initiatives to facilitate sustainable collaboration and mobility for our students and staff.

A challenge-based approach to fuel our civic, impact-driven alliance

CIVIS is driven by, and structured on the foundation of the knowledge square:

  1. Education
  2. Research
  3. Innovation
  4. Civic engagement

Our actions in designing new study programmes, facilitating research collaborations, and fostering civic engagement focuses on five major societal challenges:

  • Climate, Environment, Energy
  • Society, Culture, Heritage
  • Health
  • Cities, Spaces, Mobilities
  • Digital and Technological Transformations

At the local level, to tackle these challenges, CIVIS can lean on its “open labs,” and on a strong cooperation with local authorities and civil society as a whole.

At the European level, each of these challenges is the focus of one “Hub” where international and multi-disciplinary educational and research projects are developed.

At the global level, CIVIS addresses these challenges in close collaboration with its African partner universities.

Shared initiatives to facilitate student and staff collaboration and mobility

To facilitate and enhance the mobility and intercultural experience of our students and staff, we are developing innovative pedagogical tools, training methods, and funding strategies. Mobility will be facilitated with the implementation of a European student card.
Our IT teams are developing a digital campus which facilitates collaborative projects and resource sharing among students, academics, researchers, and administrative staff.

Structural and organisational instruments to support our long-term vision

CIVIS has established its own legal entity (CIVIS Association) and governance structure ensuring the participation of our universities’ communities, external stakeholders, including representatives of the civil society.

To ensure the development of high-quality educational pathways and research projects linked to civic engagement, we are seeking compliance with relevant labels and certifications while developing our own.

Participative and inclusive

To ensure its long-term sustainability, we have developed a strong, integrated and democratic governance model.
