Courses at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)

Proposal submissions will be open until 7th of July 

The EUROSUD – South European Studies Master, coordinated by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), invites teaching contributions from academic staff at all CIVIS member and associate partner universities. We welcome expressions of interest to design and deliver one session in the following two courses:

  • Social Challenges in Southern Europe
  • Democracy and Government in Southern Europe

These courses form part of the EUROSUD Master's second semester curriculum and aim to provide students with a deeper understanding of the political, social, and institutional dynamics of Southern Europe.

Course Focus and Geographical Scope

Sessions should address specific social or political challenges relevant to Southern Europe, with a focus on Med9 countries (Portugal, Spain, Southern France, Italy, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Croatia), as well as the Balkans or Turkey. A comparative, theoretically informed approach is strongly encouraged.

Course Topics

For the course Social Challenges in Southern Europe:

  • Ageing populations

  • Migration and refugees

  • Climate change and sustainability

  • Youth and gender roles

  • Tourism and economic resilience

  • Education and employability

  • Rural depopulation

  • Cultural heritage and identity politics

For the course Democracy and Government in Southern Europe:

  • Authoritarian legacies and democratic transitions

  • Electoral systems and party politics

  • Political culture and identities

  • Governance and decentralisation

  • EU relations and foreign policy

  • Civil society, activism, and interest groups

Applicants are welcome to propose original topics aligned with the course objectives.

Who can apply & How

This call is open to academic staff from CIVIS member universities and associate partners with relevant expertise. Interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives are especially welcome.

  • A short paragraph describing your proposed session

Session Format

Each selected contribution will consist of a 1h45 session, divided into:

  • 45 minutes lecture

  • 1 hour of student engagement (group work, discussion, analysis, etc.)

Sessions must be based on the lecturer's expertise and connect national case studies to broader Southern European or European dynamics.

Timeline

  • 7 July 2025: Proposal deadline (CV + session title + short abstract)
  • 14 July: Notification of selected proposals
  • 21 July: Signed letter of commitment and availability 
  • 21 September: Final session materials due
  • Second semester 2025–26: In-person teaching at UAM (Madrid) via Erasmus+ mobility

Submission Requirements

Selected lecturers will be asked to provide:

  • PowerPoint presentation (no slide limit)

  • Word document (7–10 pages) outlining content

  • PDF of one compulsory reading for students

The submitted session content should include:

  • Introduction and relevance of the topic

  • Comparative or regional overview

  • Case study or focused national analysis

  • Theoretical framework and interpretation

  • Concluding remarks and research directions

Teaching and Mobility

Teaching will take place in person at UAM (Madrid) via an Erasmus+ mobility (8-hour teaching/training programme), coordinated with your university’s mobility office.

If in-person delivery is not feasible, a UAM lecturer may deliver the session using the submitted materials, with full attribution to the original author.

Funding and Support

Selected proposals will be eligible for financial support (design, materials, mobility), subject to CIVIS budget availability and institutional agreements.

Specific amounts and conditions will be determined in coordination with the CIVIS Offices of the selected universities.
