Open Online Courses at Stockholm University

The application deadline for courses
in the spring of 2024 is 16 October 2023

Stockholm University invites students at CIVIS member universities to join an online module. Three courses are available for the second semester of the academic year 2023-'24 (Winter-Spring).

How to apply

On the webpage for the course listed below you will find more information about the content and entry requirements, as well as a contact person in case you have any questions.

On each course page there is a large blue button labelled 'Apply'. This will redirect you to Sweden's national application system, where you can register and submit your application for the course. Applying does not guarantee admission and you will receive notification about the decision.

You are also required to fill out this CIVIS form at the same time as you apply through the Swedish system. You must complete both processes in order to join an Open Online Course at Stockholm University and receive the CIVIS Passport afterwards.

ECTS Credits and CIVIS Passport

We will track your participation and offer you recognition through the CIVIS Passport at the end of your studies. Note that the CIVIS Passport is independent of the certification you will receive from Stockholm University upon successful completion of the course.


We recommend to check with your home university if ECTS credit points earned will be recognised as part of your programme of studies.

The course provides knowledge about how environments and remnants of 20th century Sweden and Europe today are re-interpreted and used for new purposes.

Three areas in which different aspects of a contemporary interest in the past are in focus. The first area concerns industrial heritage, the second involves problematic heritages (e.g. the Cold War) and the third relates to different forms of nostalgia. The teaching critically discusses our time's use of the past. The teaching methods integrate reading, exercises, study visits and discussions.

By focusing on conditions of “leaving”, “arrival”, and “living”, in regards to class, gender, race, religion, and generation,  this course aims to shed light on interrelated concepts that are relevant to understand an increasingly globalized world and contemporary diverse societies.

The main objective of this course is to examine transnational and translocational positionality and will introduce gendered, generational, and classed accounts of 'home' as well as migratory experiences.

Dates: 16.01.2024 - 04.06.2024 (once a week)  

In this course, you learn how to analytically and critically examine conditions for participation and learning from a societal, organizational, group, and individual perspective. Moreover, you will learn how policy and special education approaches affect special education practice.

The knowledge base learned in the course can be relevant in various forms of leading and teaching-related activities with a focus on diversity and contexts where participation and learning for all are central.
