Main topics addressed
The main topics that will be addressed during the course are :
- Rapid overview on the knowledges and the involved metabolic processes
- Insights into the ocean’s biological carbon pump, that regulates Earth carbon cycle by transporting part of the photosynthetically fixed CO2 into the deep ocean
- New paradigms about nitrogen fixation that allows to enrich marine ecosystems
- The mesopelagic zones and the role of prokaryote in the degradation of the organic matter
- Ecology of the mesopelagic zone, example of bioluminescence and its links with the biological carbon pump
This course is part of the European University of Ocean Sciences, a coordinated set of activities and programmes within CIVIS which explore vital questions for Europe's marine and maritime environments.
