NANOSUM will offer courses at the state-of-the-art (WEEK 1) and keynote seminars from actors in the development of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies (WEEK 2). Exchanges between participants will be promoted during poster sessions, round tables, visits of labs, speed-dating with academic and industrial professionals, and social events.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the CIVIS course, students should be able to:

  • Define Nanoscience
  • Distinguish the different techniques used to characterize the chemical and physical properties of nanometric condensed phases of matter
  • Understand the relationship between nanoscale and functionalization in interdisciplinary fields
  • Analyze the contributions of nanoscale to performances natural or technological

CIVIS scholarships: 40

This CIVIS course will be running for 5 days. It will consist of 20h of classrooms per week associated with special scientific professionalizing and social events.

A maximum of 40 international CIVIS students will be accepted in the course for a total of 100 students.


This CIVIS course is open to Master's and PhD students from CIVIS Universities. Participants should have robust basics in condensed matter physics and/or organic and mineral chemistry and/or biophysics.

A B2 level of English is required. 

Schedule of the course

NANOSUM 2022 is divided into two weeks.

  • WEEK 1 is open to Master's and PhD students. The NANOSUM school will offer a panel of advanced courses given by researchers from CIVIS universities and keynotes speakers. This week will include an entire day dedicated to student professionalisation.
  • WEEK 2 is open to PhD students and young researchers in the field. The NANOSUM school will provide participants with expert seminars given by international speakers who have contributed essentially to the development of nanosciences and nanotechnologies.

In both weeks, exchanges between participants will be promoted during poster sessions, round tables, visits of labs, speed-dating with academic and industrial professionals, and social events.

The school also foresees to propose seminars on the topic of Nanosciences, Environment and Society, including issues related to the role of nanotechnologies in the environmental transition.

Application process

Interested students must send a detailed CV, their transcripts of marks of the last diploma for PhD's students or of the three last semesters for Master’s students, and a motivation letter to by 30 April 2022.
Master students are welcome on WEEK 1.
PhD students may apply for participating in WEEK 1 or WEEK 2, please indicate your preference in your message.


Important note: Housing is arranged by the school. Therefore, once selected, students will have to pay the amount granted by the scholarship for housing.


The course will not be graded, but we will have special prizes for the poster and flash talk sessions.

General Eligibility Criteria for CIVIS Courses

Applicants need to be enrolled at their home university in order to be eligible for selection and participation.  If uncertain about your status at your home university (part-time or exchange students etc) please check with your home university’s website or International Office. 

Applicants who will be receiving other Erasmus funds for the duration of the course are not entitled to funding. Participation in the course may still be possible under “zero-grant” status, but applicants should contact their home university in order to confirm this.
