This CIVIS Student Week “GLOBAL MIGRATION ON THE GROUND” is a transdisciplinary collaborative program that will offer a broad perspective on migration as a global phenomenon, connecting research and practice. Connected to both mobility and displacement, incorporation and exclusion, global migration carries both benefits and challenges. This ambivalence has been overshadowed in the last years by negative interpretations, mainly connected to the “refugee crisis” and its consequences – hardship, trauma and loss of life, as well as fevered political debates. It has become clear that many European countries accept migrants only with reservation, especially refugees.

Meanwhile, many efforts have been made to improve the way migration is globally governed, involving the cooperation between states, civil society, and private sector organizations. This cooperative approach is warrant by the highly diverse causes of migration: conflict, extreme violence, severe economic and political instability, environmental and climate change, but also participation in student exchange and expatriate programmes as well as demands for qualified labor. New strategies have been developed to help migrants settle and assist them in reconstructing their lives. Still, much work remains to be done to find solutions that work for everyone.

During this week, students will be challenged to reflect on the way the topic is discussed in academia, the media, and politics. Fostering cooperation within the CIVIS alliance and with partners in civil society, the event aims to make students aware that global issues do not have simple solutions — they demand cooperation between different academic specializations and multiple stakeholders. Moreover, participants will be in contact with researchers, students, and organizations from different European countries where global migration stems from different causes, creates diverse effects and is dealt with in various ways. This will support the development of critical thinking and open new possibilities for international cooperation and European solutions.

Programme

This CIVIS Student Week has a varied programme, which cna be downloaded at the bottom of this page. It includes the following activities:

  • Lectures and lessons: twenty lecturers will present their cutting-edge research on global migration, addressing student migration, questions of European citizenship, demographic aspects of international migration also using big data, the use of categories to classify migrants and migratory movements, human rights, the relationship between migration and development questions, the specificities of the Mediterranean area, and the relationship of migration and climate change.
  • Workshops with civil society organizations: several organizations working with issues related to migration will present their activities and invite students to engage with them in thinking of solutions to problems they face in their activities, applying Service-Learning approaches to their projects. These workshops are organised in cooperation with the CIVIS OpenLab of the University of Tübingen.
  • Challenge: working in university-mixed groups, students will cooperate to formulate an answer to a challenge connected to global migration, which will be submitted in form of an essay one week after the event.
  • Presentation of students’ research: excellent bachelor and master thesis as well as very good seminar essays related to global migration will be presented during the event. Interested students may submit their proposal together with their registration.
  • Presentation of master programs related to global migration: participating universities will present their master programs as well as special programs related to migration, where students can deepen their knowledge and training in this area.
  • Opening ceremony: as an introduction to the debates of this CIVIS Student Week, there will be a keynote speaker in the opening ceremony.
  • Closing ceremony: to close this CIVIS Student Week, there will be a roundtable discussion with lecturers, representatives of civil society organizations, and students, reviewing the activities and offering outlook for global migration.

All activities will take place between 9 AM and 6 PM (CEST).

  • differentiated knowledge on migration from the perspective of different disciplines
  • skills in participating in transdisciplinary debates on migration and their relationship with concrete problems faced by civil soiety organizations
  • critical thinking on global migration processes, reflecting on its main challenges and solutions
  • skills in working in international teams to solve common problems

Workload

As the course takes place over just five days, we expect students to work on it full time during this period (13-17 September 2021).

Assessment

In order to receive the certificate of attendance and the 3 ECTS credits related to this CIVIS Student Week, students are required to undertake the following mandatory activities and choose at least one of the optional activities:

Mandatory activities:

  • Attend at least eight lectures or lessons
  • Attend  at least four workshops with civil society organizations
  • Write a five-page essay responding to the challenge proposed to this CIVIS Student Week and submit it at the latest one week after the event (group activity)

Optional activities:

  • Presentation of a research work developed under supervision of a professor (individual activity)
  • Write a five-page reflection on the activities developed on the workshops with the civil society organizations and submit it at the latest one week after the event (group activity)

ECTS Accreditation

1-3 ECTS will be available. Recognition of these credits is dependent on your home university.

Requirements

This CIVIS Student Week "Global Migration on the Ground" will offer 100 places for students who meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in one of the CIVIS universities as bachelor or master student,
  • Be able to communicate in English (at least, level B2),
  • Be able to follow the activities online (technical equipment).

As this event has a focus on transdisciplinarity, it is open to students enrolled in all areas of study.

Selection Criteria

In case there are more interested students than places available, we will select students following these criteria:

Affiliated university:

  • 30 places for students at the University of Tübingen
  • 20 places for students at the Sapienza University of Rome
  • 20 places for students at the Aix-Marseille University
  • 10 places for students at the University of Stockholm
  • 20 places for students at other CIVIS universities

Study program (estimated proportion):

  • 70 places for bachelor students
  • 30 places for master students

Call for presentations of students' research

During the CIVIS Student Week, there will be a small conference for the presentation of students’ research related to global migration. If you wrote an excellent bachelor or master thesis, or a very good seminar essay, you may submit a proposal to present your research in this conference.

To submit your proposal, please follow this guideline:

  • Title of your presentation
  • Extended abstract of your research with 1000 words in English
  • Three keywords
  • Context in which your research was conducted (bachelor or master thesis, regular course, research training course, etc.)

Selection criteria for student presentations

  • The topic of the presentation should be clearly related to global migration.
  • The abstract presents a well-structured argumentation.
  • The research has clear results.

Modalities of presentation

During this CIVIS Student Week, 12 students will have the opportunity to make an oral presentation of their research. If we receive more than 12 excellent proposals, we will consider the organization of a session for short videocasts.

Deadlines for application and notification are the same as those for the whole CIVIS Student Week.
