Would you like to practise your foreign language skills with native-level speakers and other learners? CIVIS can help you!

Stockholm University has started its online Language Cafes and Tandem Language Buddy programme for the term (September - December 2025) and we are all invited!

Tandem Language Buddy programme

Through the Tandem programme, you can be matched with a language buddy to practise each other's languages. Your language buddy is a native-level speaker of your target language and vice versa.

It is not about formal teaching, but rather an informal language exchange for which you decide the methods and forms (such as how often you meet and for how long).

The programme is open to all students and members of staff at CIVIS universities, thus all languages are welcome.

*registrations are valid for the current term only, so you have to fill out the form each term.

Language Cafés

Practise your language skills and cultural awareness by talking to native speakers and other learners, in an informal setting.

The cafés are run by student native-level speakers on a voluntary basis. No credits are given and no teachers are present, unless they are learners, too. You are welcome to participate on a regular basis or drop in spontaneously.

The Language Cafés are organised both online (via Zoom) and on campus at Stockholm University. The languages and meeting format are decided by the language competences and the meeting preferences of the students volunteering as coordinators (language supporters).

All languages are welcome!

Romance Language Cafe

If you speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, or another Romance language at B1 level or higher, then save the date: each Thursday, between 18 September - 11 December.

¡Bienvenidos! – Bem-vindos! – Bienvenus! – Benvenuti! – Bine ai venit! at the Romance Language Cafe - an event bringing together students who speak any Romance language for a plurilingual exchange: you speak Italian, your conversation partner speaks French, someone else speaks Romanian – and you can still understand each other.

How is that possible?

Thanks to their common origin, Romance languages have similar vocabulary (e.g. es. universidad, pt. universidad, fr. université, it. università, ro. universitate) and comparable grammar structures, i.e. a high degree of mutual intelligibility – even if you’ve never studied the other language.

The Romance Language Cafe helps you practice expressing yourself clearly and accessibly, even for people who don’t speak your exact language. You’ll develop cross-language communication strategies, such as:

  • slowing down your speech
  • repeating and paraphrasing words and phrases
  • using words with shared roots across languages
  • supporting your speech with gestures or visual cues
The Romance Language Cafe takes place every Thursday between 18 September - 11 December from 2:00 to 2:50 P.M. (CEST).

The event is led by Dr. Cristoph Hülsmann, Senior Scientist at Sprachenzentrum. All students and staff at CIVIS universities are welcome to participate. No registration required.

JOIN THE MEETINGS

and be part of a plurilingual experience, whether you're brushing up your language skills, exploring new varieties, or just curious about how far Romance-language understanding can go.
