The aim of the course is to encourage research in the linguistic cultures of the geographical areas of the 6 participating universities with a view to achieve:

  • Appreciation of how language shapes identity and culture
  • Knowledge of how languages live and are shaped within different geographic spaces
  • Experience in fieldwork research methods
  • Outreach to the general public

Students will also participate in building the collections and devising displays for Eurotales, our Museum Lab of the Voices of Europe inaugurated in July 2022 at Sapienza which is our ‘outlet’ for involving also the general public in our research and in the dissemination of its results.

Virtual part

The virtual part will be running from 21 October to 16 December 2022 (2 hours per week).

  1. Introduction and scope of Eurotales project and Museum - Language, community and place - Linguistic biographies and linguistic genealogies - Traces and migration 
  2. Field and research methods in sociolinguistics and history for Traces and 
  3. Resonances (linguistic biographies)  Workshop (in teams). 
  4. Traces (language traces in monuments and landscape Workshop (in teams).
  5. Visit by Rome staff to partner universities for hybrid seminars 
  6. Representing resonances and traces to the public 
  7. Review of draft work - traces student presentations
  8. Trace itineraries 
  9. Final presentations by students 
  10. Preparation for in-person work in Rome (20 hrs)  

All virtual lectures will be held on a Friday at 14:00 starting on 21 October 2022 until 16 December 2022.

Physical mobility

The physical mobility part will take place from 9 to 13 January 2023.

Students will come to Rome for 5 days and will engage in 4 hours of activities per day (20 hours).

The activities will comprise:

  • Discussion and presentation of the work students did at their home university (Resonances, Traces)
  • Visit to the Eurotales museum and itineraries to explore the Traces in Rome
  • Seminars on migration and transits and their bearing on the linguistic culture in Europe
  • Interviews with multilingual communities in Rome
  • Conversations with writers and media personalities about language culture in Europe

Requirements

This course is open to Bachelor's, Master and PhD students at CIVIS member universities. Applicants should have an interest in languages and social studies.

Application process

Interested students should fill in the online application form by 30 September 2022, including a motivation letter and their level of English.

The evaluation criteria are the following:

  • Genuine interest in the project
  • Research interest in language and/or museum studies
  • Good knowledge of English and at least 1 other foreign language
  • Computer literacy

Assessment

The evaluation will be carried out by the 5 contact people at participating institutions and will consist of an assessment of the project submitted by participating students.
