The course adopts a comparative methodology in order to study the integration of Renaissance culture in a broader context of cultural exchange.  It examines a variety of ideas and products that the West retrieved from the East and vice versa, reflecting on the creative assimilation of different traditions across the Mediterranean.

This BIP is organized by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Sapienza Università di Roma, Aix-Marseille Université, Université Libre de Bruxelles and the University of Bucharest.

Learning outcomes

The program invites attendees to explore as-yet-underexplored connections between Renaissance cultural traditions across Europe and the Mediterranean.

The objective is to examine and emphasize the impact of transnational connections and dialogues in (re)shaping modern social and individual civic responsibility on the national, European and global levels.

  • Friday, 14.06.2024: Geography, Cartography, Antiquities

Virtual part

The virtual part will be running from 8 February to 7 March 2024. Compulsory readings will be indicated to students before and after each lesson:

  • Session 1 (8 Feb. 2024): Presentation of the course. Introduction: Culture and Society of the Renaissance
  • Session 2 (15 Feb. 2024): Literature, Arts and Music
  • Session 3 (22 Feb. 2024): History, Politics, Economy
  • Session 4 (29 Feb. 2024): Sciences, Philosophy and Religion
  • Session 5 (7 Mar. 2024): Geography, Cartography, Antiquities

Requirements

This course is open to Master's and PhD students at CIVIS member universities enrolled in Early Modern European history and literature.

Participants should have a good level of written and spoken English (B2 level), as well as critical thinking, creativity, text analysis writing, presentation and communication skills. The course will be held mainly in English, but workshops and presentations might include Italian.

The assessment will be based on the following criteria:

  • Written paper (6.000 characters aprox): 50%
  • Oral presentation (20 minutes): 50%
