Physical mobility

During an intensive week (29 April - 3 May 2024), the course brings the students together in Stockholm for text seminars and interactive workshops taking place at the involved culture institutions in the city.

Combining:

• traditional seminars focussing on critically discussing texts by prominent scholars dealing with various kinds of culture production;
• interactive workshops;
• individual fieldwork;
• and peer-review assessments,

the course is a compilation of various teaching and learning methods that will help the students develop some of the skills needed for working both inside and outside of the academia.

Virtual part

During the fieldwork carried out at the partner institutions, students and professors will meet once a week via zoom for a half-day seminar to discuss the work that is carried out, including ventilating possible hinders and obstacles, and helping each other overcome them. These seminars will be formative and supportive, and will help students frame their methods and gather the needed material so their work is also useful to the institution involved.

At the end of the course, on 12, 13 and 14 June 2024, when students have finalized writing an article, essay or report about their fieldwork, students and professors will all meet for two full days via zoom for peer-review seminars. These constructive seminars and their discussions will help student improve their work further - especially for those who are interested in trying to publish their article in a journal/ anthology. It will also help students develop their reviewing skills.

Requirements

This course is open to students enroled in a PhD program within the Humanities or the Social Sciences, at CIVIS member universities. Due to the specific organization of the course - with a 4-week long fieldwork period in either Stockholm, Rome or Madrid - students enrolled in PhD-programs at SU, SUR and UAM will be be given priority. 

Participants should have a good level of written and spoken English (B1 level), critical thinking, knowledge of data analysis - qualitative and quantitative methods, research communication and transferable skills.

Also, a reference letter from PhD supervisor(s) supporting the student in taking this course is mandatory.

• Document prooving the level of English (According to CEFR)

All applications will be evaluatedd based on the applicant's motivation, PhD project and topic and number of PhD-credits taken by October 2023.

Assessment

Based on their fieldwork, students will take a written exam in the form of an article, essay or a report. After having finished their written exam, they will also have to give an oral presentation on their findings. In addition to that, they will have to carry out a constructive review of other student exams during a final peer-review seminar.
