The school addresses PhD students from CIVIS and non-CIVIS universities. Depending on the stage of the research process, anyone writing an empirical qualification thesis is faced with very different questions about writing: How to present my research idea to research funders? How to write 'in the field'? How to formulate the results appropriately in an international context? Guided by experts in qualitative social research, participants develop and reflect on adequate forms of writing for different stages of their research process.
Main topics addressed
For the first time, the school is offered as a joint CIVIS event, with project partners in Glasgow and Brussels, and we hope that participants will come from all over Europe (and maybe beyond). At the same time, we continue to offer workshops in German as many participants write theses in German and have data material in the German language. Thus, the school will be bilingual with an English keynote and roundtable and workshops in either English or German. This year, the following workshops will be offered:
- Das Schreiben von Anträgen und Exposés für qualitative Studien (Prof. Dr. Almut Peukert)
- Ethnografische Schreibweisen (Dr. Tobias Boll)
- Reflexivity and Writing (Dr. Andreas Streinzer)
- Qualitative Forschung in englischen Zeitschriftenaufsätzen publizieren (Assistant Prof. Dr. Susann Wagenknecht)
- Writing Up Findings: Developing rich and convincing empirical accounts (Prof. Dr Kathleen Riach)
Learning outcomes
Active participants share material from their own research projects.
Projects will be selected according to the particular goals of the workshops. Other participants (non-active) do not bring their own material but still learn a lot from debating the other examples.
Work in progress is always welcome, and those sharing their own project in the workshop will benefit greatly.
