The course will provide an overview of the current research in Korean studies in various disciplines like History, Society and Language. The course will be followed by a Summer School, in which students will apply their newfound knowledge to their own research and present their findings, contributing to the development of Korean Studies in Europe.

Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, students are expected to:
- Broaden their overview of current research trends of Korean Studies’ multiple disciplines

Physical mobility
The physical mobility section of the BIP will take place between 25th - 29th May 2026, in Rome, Italy.
The on-site part of the course will be structured as follows:
- On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, students will attend lectures delivered by professors, each covering their respective topics within Korean Studies. These sessions will include a keynote speech, offering valuable insights into the latest research trends and significant developments in the field. Following the lectures, students will participate in mentoring sessions within small groups, where they will receive personalized guidance on their academic work and career development.
- In the afternoons, students will present their research to their peers and professors, followed by discussions aimed at fostering critical thinking and deepening their understanding of the subject matter. This will allow for an exchange of ideas and constructive feedback, enhancing their academic growth. On Wednesday, students will have the opportunity to engage in a field trip or cultural experience, providing them with a hands-on exploration of the local context related to Korean Studies. This blend of academic learning, interactive mentoring, and cultural immersion aims to create a rich, interdisciplinary educational experience for all participants.
Virtual part
The course will run online on a weekly basis from 2nd March until 4th May 2026. The program of the virtual part is the following:
- Week 1 (2 March 2026): Korean History I
- Week 2 (9 March 2026): Korean History II
- Week 3 (16 March 2026): Korean Religion I
- Week 4 (23 March 2026): Korean Religion II
- Week 5 (30 March 2026): Korean Society I
- Week 6 (6 April 2026): Korean Society II
- Week 7 (13 April 2026): Korean Literature I
- Week 8 (20 April 2026): Korean Literature II
- Week 9 (27 April 2026): Gender in Korea
- Week 10 (4 May 2026): North Korea
Assessment
The objective of the course is to train the students academically for research. Assessment of the research papers and the presentations of the paper by trained professionals in their respective fields will improve the learning outcomes.
Students will be assessed on the quality of their research and the presentation. They will be judged on the implementation of what they learned during the online lessons for their own research. This means their research questions, methodology and results.
The programme is open to Master's and PhD students enrolled in CIVIS member universities with an academic backround in Korean Studies.
Proficiency in English (minimum B2 level) is required, as the course will be conducted in English and implies active participation from all students. In addition, Korean Language Skill (Equivalent of TOPIK 4 or higher) is also desirable and will be taken into consideration.
Critical thinking, critical reading, Analysis of historical sources, Presentation, Research methods skills are highly appreciated.
NB: Visiting Students - Erasmus Funding Eligibility
To be eligible for your selected CIVIS programme, you must be a fully enrolled student at your CIVIS home university at the time you will be undertaking the programme. Applications for this course are only available for the 11 CIVIS member universities in Europe.
