This micro-programme introduces to the interdisciplinary field of study known as STS (Science, Technology Society or Science and Technology Studies), through a focus on how to support green innovation, inclusive digitalization and ethical biomedicalization. STS takes advantage of a whole range of fields, from history and philosophy of science, technology and medicine (including bioethics, environmental ethics and techno-ethics) to policy, economics, innovation, management and governance of science, technology and medicine.

The courses of the Science, Technology, Society Micro-Programme will be offered during the 2022-2023 academic year. They include one required course and several elective courses, which will have to amount to a total of 15 ECTS. The elective courses fall under two clusters:

Upon successful completion of the Micro Programme, students will receive a certificate of attendance. Depending on the course, students will be evaluated based on one or more of the following:

  • Active Participation and Attendance
  • Weekly Assignments
  • Final Presentation or Paper Written or Oral Examination

Upon completing the Micro-Programme in Science, Technology, Society students will become familiar with ways to:

  • Analyze, interpret, intervene and make recommendations on issues of relevance to science, technology and medicine, based on interdisciplinary perspectives from the human and the social sciences
  • Understand and address challenges connected to informatics and telecommunications (AI, Big Data, IoT, social media, Robotics-Automation), scientific and technological fields of relevance to environmental science and technology (especially energy and transportation technologies), and biology, medicine, biomedicine and biotechnology (from gene editing, stem cells and biobanking to the study of pandemics).

The application deadline is extended to 23 September 2022

20 applicants will be selected and notified by 10 September 2022. 

Applicants must be Master or PhD students at one of the CIVIS Alliance member universities (no limitation on fields or domains) and have a certificate of knowledge of the English language, level B2 or above.

  • Personal Identification (i.e. copy of state ID/Passport)
  • Certificate of knowledge of the English language

A selection committee will evaluate the applications and select the participants. If needed, candidates will be interviewed by the committee.
