Two UNIL Professors awarded with Doctor Honoris Causa by NKUA

The Department of Medicine, School of Health Sciences of the NKUA has awarded the prestigious title of Doctor Honoris Causa - the highest distinction awarded by the institution - to two distinguished professors from the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne.

Prof. George Coukos, head of the Department of Oncology UNIL-CHUV and director of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Lausanne, has received the exceptional recognition for a career dedicated to innovation in oncology.

He is known for his work on the mechanisms by which tumors suppress anti-cancer immune responses, and the role of the tumor vasculature in that suppression. In addition to his work in ovarian cancer, the combinatorial immune therapies proposed by Professor Coukos have been successfully tested and approved for lung, liver and kidney cancers.

The second awardee is Prof. Solange Peters, head of the Medical Oncology Service at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV). She has been honoured for her outstanding career in translational lung cancer research and her commitment to equality and inclusion in healthcare.

At the ceremony, Prof. Peters gave an inspiring speech entitled "Diversity, Equity and Cancer’", demonstrating her commitment to greater equality and inclusion in the field of healthcare. Her exemplary dedication to improving the lives of cancer patients around the world is an inspiration for us all. 

Solange Peters' remarkable career is distinguished by her translational research into lung cancer, her innovations in immunotherapy and her commitment as a mentor. Founder of Women for Oncology, she actively campaigns to promote gender equality in medicine.

These awards highlight the remarkable achievements and contributions of both professors to the medical and scientific communities.
