Shared decision-making (SDM) is already a comprehensive approach to healthcare worldwide. It is based on establishing a consensus between the physician and the patient to value the intervention possibilities. The current situation and SDM tools in health will be known through this course and their pros and cons in specific diseases to integrate SDM into routine clinical practice. In addition, the rise of online technologies facilitates the development of new aid decision support tools to plan the treatment of diseases such as cancer more humanely.

Learning outcomes

To gain awareness of the necessity of an interdisciplinary health care approach for SDM that integrates concepts from ethics, social, technological, humanistic, and health sciences

A maximum of 30 international CIVIS students will be accepted in the course for a total of 40 students.

Schedule of the course

This CIVIS course consists of 5 sessions, one session per day, in different formats (e.g., presentations, roundtables, discussions) from 9:30 to 13:30 CET.

Requirements

This CIVIS course is open to Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD students at one of the CIVIS member universities and from any field related to Shared decision-making.

A B1 level of English and some knowledge of Spanish are required.

Application process

Students from CIVIS universities should complete the form as an expression of interest (EOI).

In the form, you will have to upload data, a brief CV (one page), a one-page cover letter indicating your motivation to attend the first Summer Course on Shared Decision-making (SDM) in health at Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain), and a language certificate.
Any student from the ten CIVIS universities can submit their EOI.
In case we would need to select specific students, it is encouraged that BA and MA students add a reference from a supervisor, and Ph.D. students a short outline about how SDM can be linked to their doctoral project (around 500 words)
All application material should be submitted by the form by clicking on 'apply now'.

Students should apply by 30 June 2022 and the selected ones will be notified by the beginning of July.

Assessment

The students will be required to participate in the course actively, and assistance will be recorded by those attending the course at Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. The students will need to complete a questionnaire related to the contents of the course on the final day before collecting the certificate.

The course is blended, but only those who will physically attend the course will be assessed.

General Eligibility Criteria for CIVIS Courses

Applicants need to be enrolled at their home university in order to be eligible for selection and participation. If uncertain about your status at your home university (part-time or exchange students etc) please check with your home university’s website or International Office.

Applicants who will be receiving other Erasmus funds for the duration of the course are not entitled to funding. Participation in the course may still be possible under “zero-grant” status, but applicants should contact their home university in order to confirm this.

Directors of the CIVIS Summer School:

Héctor Guadalajara (FJD-UAM) – He is chairman of Surgery at University Hospital Fundación Jimenez Díaz (UH FJD) and Associate Professor at “Universidad Autonoma de Madrid” (UAM, Spain) since 2014. He is mainly a Colorectal Surgeon participating in 250 procedures per year, with a special dedication to robotic colorectal surgery and proctology. Product of this medical activity, he is one of the world pioneers of stem cell therapy for fistula in Crohn's disease and provides his expertise to Takeda Company worldwide. Another essential aspect of his career is the University teaching and innovation in education. He is one of the leading promoters of “Operemos.es”. “Operemos.es” is a contact network that facilitates education to students and people willing to learn technical maneuvers. As chairman of Surgery, he has been involved in automating the surgical worklist at Quirónsalud, a project that has significantly increased the surgical yields in the Operation Room. And finally, he has been committed to health care humanization by implementing sharing decision tools.
Olatz Lopez-Fernandez (FJD-UAM-UCM) – She is a health psychologist researcher at UF FJD, a teaching assistant professor at UAM, and an Associate professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM, Spain). Her expertise is as a health psychologist and applied research in health sciences, developing and managing research projects such as the Marie Curie Fellowship to promote the detection, follow-up, and prevention of traditional and emerging health diseases through new technologies and methods. She places her work on the educational and healthcare arena from a psychological and humanistic perspective, such as addictions or oncologic problems from a psychological standpoint. She has led projects within the European Commission and European Parliament and leads a Spanish competitive project on SDM in oncology at UH FJD.
