Welcome to Equitable and Just Digital Society: Developing Interdisciplinary Skills and Knowledge (ECTS 3)- a postgraduate-level course, part of an unfolding CIVIS postgraduate micro-programme focused on the social challenges of digital and technological transformations.

While taking this course, you will develop critical knowledge and practical skills to become interactional experts in research for an equitable and just digital society.

The interdisciplinary approach covers the Sociology of Digital Society, Power and Justice in the Digital Age from an International Perspective, Digital Media, Social Participation and Life-Long Learning, Human-Computer Interaction, Design and Information Society and Integrated Research and Ethics.

You will be taught by leading experts from world-leading universities:

  • University of Glasgow (UK),
  • University of Tubingen (Germany),
  • Stockholm University (Sweden)
  • Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain),
  • University of Witwatersrand (South Africa).

You may enrol in this course as an individual learning experience or complete the micro-programme course of study as additional courses are launched on the following academic years.

Goal

The aims of the course are to enable students to become ‘interactional experts’ - people who can work in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary ways to address the challenges of ensuring that digital tools and services are developed in equitable and just ways for the communities they aim to support.

This includes developing students' understanding of the technical capabilities and limitations of digital technology while also having the skills and knowledge to take human behaviour, social interactions, and social and cultural contexts into account. 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • independently identify areas for research in digital society related topic areas, their significance and importance to knowledge development and the end-users of digital services;
  • think carefully and rigorously about the ethics of research and how to consider ethics in the design and development of a digital service;
  • analyse and synthesise cross-sectoral learning strategies to collaboratively design, develop and produce digital tools and services;
  • demonstrate the ability to evaluate and formulate digital transformations, involving new approaches to learning, collaboration, and participation within diverse social contexts.

Content

The course is delivered online, in 10 two-hour workshops during the second semester of the 2024-25 academic year.

  • Power and justice in the digital age from an international perspective 
  • Human–computer interaction. Design and Information Society

It is anticipated that more modules will be developed as the micro-programme is expanded in future.

Please ensure that you upload your certificate of enrolment directly with your application. We cannot admit you to the micro-programme without this document. You will be informed at the latest after the end of the application period whether you have been admitted to the micro-programme.
