The Course offers insights and instruction on urban archaeology, that is an investigation of the material past of ancient towns and cities; archaeology in urban environments becomes especially pertinent in cases where habitation has been continuous since antiquity, as in the examples of Athens and Marseilles. 

The Course will consist of five days of lectures, classes, on-site instruction, and a student workshop on the particularities, interdisciplinary nature, and everyday challenges of fieldwork in contemporary urban environments.

Programme of the course:

The Athens Student Week will consist of three days of classes, followed by a day-long student workshop, and a half-day of student presentations. Evening lectures and on-site activities are also included.

Evaluation: A committee of participating professors will evaluate participants, based on workshop performance and presentations, on the last day of the Course.

*Subject to review, depending on the development of the current global pandemic. If overseas travelling and in-person teaching are not advisable, the entire course will be transferred online.

Non-CIVIS students (BA, MA, and PhD) may also apply, subject to a €300 fee covering all tuition and ECTS certificate. 

All tuition, instruction, evaluation, and accreditation for the course are free for participating CIVIS students; non-residents also receive airfare and daily compensation for the duration of the course.

Dimitris Plantzos

Dimitris Plantzos is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied history and archaeology at Athens and got his Master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Greek art and archaeology, archaeological theory, and modern receptions of classical antiquity.

Platon Petridis

Platon Petridis is Professor of Byzantine Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He holds a bachelor from the University of Athens, an MA and a PhD from Paris I- Panthéon- Sorbonne. He is an ancient Fellow of the French School of Archaeology at Athens. He is a specialist of Early Byzantine architecture and pottery. He is the director or co-director of archaeological excavations at Delphi, Thassos and Kapandriti.

Yiannis Papadatos

Yiannis Papadatos is Associate Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied history and archaeology at Athens and got his PhD degree at the University of Sheffield (UK). His is conducting archaeological fieldwork projects in Marathon and Crete, and his research focuses on archaeology of death, ancient technology and fieldwork methodology and practice.

Giorgos Vavouranakis

Giorgos Vavouranakis is Associate Professor of Prehistoric Aegean at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied history and archaeology at Athens and got his Master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on Minoan Crete, archaeological theory and the history of the archaeological discipline.

Konstantinos Kopanias

Konstantinos Kopanias is Associate Professor of Archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied history and archaeology at Athens and got his Master’s degree at the University of Salzburg and his PhD degree at the Universities of Tübingen and Athens. His research focuses on Eastern Mediterranean archaeology.

Chrysanthos Kanellopoulos

Chrysanthos Kanellopoulos is Associate Professor of Classical Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; in 1996 he got his PhD on the architecture of classical and Hellenistic Kea at the same institution. He has worked on archaeological sites in Jordan and Greece. He currently teaches Greek and Roman Architecture in the Department of History and Archaeology and runs a number of research projects in Athens, Boeotia and the Peloponnese.

Marlen Mouliou

Marlen Mouliou is Assistant Professor of Museology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She studied history and archaeology at Athens and got her Master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Leicester. Her research focuses on museum history, museum archaeology, urban museology and generally on the social value and transformative power of museums.
