Eating disorders are severe mental health issues causing a high burden across Europe. Main diagnoses comprise anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. The course is a joint project of eating disorder researchers from Athens, Madrid, Stockholm and Tübingen and will span the whole spectrum of eating disorders as well as a broad spectrum of topics, including e.g. epidemiology, development, personality traits and neuroinflammation.

  • Transgenerational transmission of eating disorders – recent evidence on putative mechanisms from biopsychological research
  • Developmental origins and social patterning of eating disorders: insights from life-course epidemiological research
  • New perspectives into the pathophysiology of eating disorders: the role of neuroinflammation
  • New insights into the link between binge-eating episodes and comorbid psychopathology among the spectrum of eating disorders
  • Mediators of the clinical manifestations of anorexia nervosa: from personality to hormones

Learning outcomes

Attendees will get knowledge on the following aspects:

  • Overview on research approaches and methods investigating transgenerational transmission of eating disorders
  • How concepts of developmental origins of health and disease can be applied to eating disorders
  • Recent findings on the role of neuroinflammation in eating disorders
  • In-depth look at binge eating episodes, their psychological comorbidities and new insights into the assessment and treatment of BED
  • The role of adipokines and olfactory capacity as biological markers and the role of personality and resilience as psychosocial markers in anorexia nervosa

This CIVIS course will consist of 5 sessions of 60 minutes each day for 5 days.

There is no limit to students accepted in the CIVIS course.

Requirements

This CIVIS course is open to Master's and PhD students from CIVIS Universities who have basic knowledge of eating disorders.

A C1 level of English is required.

General Eligibility Criteria for CIVIS Courses

Applicants need to be enrolled at their home university in order to be eligible for selection and participation.  If uncertain about your status at your home university (part-time or exchange students etc) please check with your home university’s website or International Office. 

Applicants who will be receiving other Erasmus funds for the duration of the course are not entitled to funding. Participation in the course may still be possible under “zero-grant” status, but applicants should contact their home university in order to confirm this.
