Welcome to Digital Transformations in Oncology (ECTS 3) - an undergraduate-level course, part of an unfolding CIVIS undergraduate micro-programme focused on the digital and technological transformations in oncology.

"Digital Transformations in Oncology" course serves as a key component of the Digital Transformations in Health and Wellbeing micro-programme within the HUB5 - CIVIS network, focusing on the integration of digital solutions and artificial intelligence to revolutionize cancer diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
The whole micro-programme consist of a set of 5 courses as follows:

C1: Digital and Technological Transformation: Social Challenges Across Domains offered by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

C2: EU Law and the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Health and Wellbeing offered by Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen

C3: Artificial Intelligence Tools in Health and Wellbeing offered by Aix-Marseille Université

C4: Digital Transformations in Oncology offered by University of Bucharest

C5: New Technologies in the Diagnostic and Treatment of Cancer offered by Aix-Marseille Université

These courses will be offered independently by each coordinating university during the academic year. Students graduating each course will receive transcript of records from each coordinating university. Students graduating all 5 courses will additionally receive a certificate for the whole microprograme from the University of Bucharest.

"Digital Transformations in Oncology" provides students with a comprehensive perspective on how digital technologies reshape cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research. While attending this course, students will explore the advancements in digital imaging, AI, bioinformatics, and telemedicine that have increasingly become integral to modern oncology. Aimed at medical, biomedical, and engineering students, this course emphasizes the theoretical frameworks and practical applications of digital tools. By integrating multidisciplinary approaches, this course prepares students for advanced academic research and professional applications, fostering innovation in digital healthcare.

The lecturers of this course are from the University of Bucharest (Romania) and will host several partners from international companies that will give real input from the industry. They invite bachelor’s level students to join them on a journey to discover how oncology meets the digital era.

This course aims to introduce bachelor’s-level students to foundational digital tools and techniques that are becoming essential in cancer care. Designed as an introductory course, it focuses on building basic knowledge of AI, digital imaging, bioinformatics, and telemedicine, emphasizing their role in oncology. Students will gain a practical understanding of these technologies, preparing them to apply this knowledge in further studies or to explore emerging trends in digital healthcare, laying the groundwork for more advanced applications in the field.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Describe basic digital imaging methods and understand their role in cancer diagnosis.
  • Explain how AI and machine learning can support cancer treatment planning and predict patient outcomes.
  • Identify key bioinformatics tools used in analyzing genetic data and their importance in personalized medicine.
  • Summarize the role of telemedicine in improving patient care and recognize its applications in remote cancer monitoring.
  • Recognize the applications of wearable devices and robotics in oncology, such as continuous health monitoring and assisting in precise surgical procedures.

Each module includes lectures, case studies, and hands-on seminars using digital tools for imaging analysis and bioinformatics platforms. Through these activities, students will apply theoretical insights to real-world cancer cases, solving complex problems and evaluating current digital oncology practices.

This module is part of the micro-programme Digital Transformations in Health and Wellbeing and will be offered independently by the University of Bucharest during semester I of the 2025/2026 academic year. Students graduating each module of the micro-programme will receive transcript of records from each coordinating university. Students graduating all 5 modules will additionally receive a certificate for the whole micro-programme from the University of Bucharest (coordinator of the micro-programme).

Calendar

The course is structured into 24 contact hours, combining 12 hours of lectures and 12 hours of seminars, distributed across the semester. The online sessions start at 6:00 PM CET and will take place on the following dates:

  • November 2025: 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21
  • December 2025: 8, 12, 15 and 19
  • January 2026: 12 and 16

* if agreed with students, some classes could also take place during the weekends

Application process

The applications for the micro-programme "Digital Transformations in Oncology" are open until 21st October 2025.

Please ensure that you upload your certificate of enrolment directly with your application. We cannot admit you to the micro-programme without this document. You will be informed at the latest after the end of the application period whether you have been admitted to the micro-programme.

Once accepted, the students will receive the learning materials, and the links for the virtual sessions on Moodle.

Short bio of the course lead:

PhD Bianca Galateanu is an Associate Professor at the University of Bucharest and also a Scientific Researcher in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the same university. Holding a double specialization in Biochemistry and also in Pharmacy, she is an experienced researcher in the biomedical field of research, with over 17 years of experience in cancer research. She is co-founder of OncoHub and President of the Romanian National OncoHub Conference (www.oncohub.ro) which gathers every year famous scientists approaching multidisciplinary topics in oncology and cancer research, including the impact of the digital and technological transformations in the field.
