Great news for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens! In its 2024-2025 top, the US News & World Report Media Company placed the Greek university 215th out of 2,250 universities from 104 countries. NKUA has climbed 35 places from last year, to the highest place ever achieved by a Greek Higher Educational Institution in all the editions of the US News Best Global Universities Rankings.

At the same time, NKUA ranked 1st among the 12 Greek Universities taken into consideration, followed by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Technical University of Athens. On European level, NKUA ranked 81st among the 715 European Universities in the table.

Significant distinctions in 25 domains

This year, NKUA placed high globally in 25 domains, three more than in 2024. For Cardiac & Cardiovascular Systems, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Infectious Diseases, the university entered the top 100 worldwide.

This distinction undoubtedly confirms the international recognition and acclaim of our University, and the value, quality and high impact of its academic and research work. It is our Institution’s academic staff who - sometimes under adverse conditions - achieve all these extraordinary distinctions. We will continue our efforts towards internationalization, extroversion, and high quality to ensure that NKUA remains always at the top", said the Rector of NKUA, Professor of Cardiology Gerasimos Siasos.

Best Global Universities, in its 10th edition, has dominated University rankings in the US for years and is currently in the top 7 of rankings internationally. It provides insight into how universities compare globally, since an increasing number of students enroll in universities outside of their home countries. The rankings focus exclusively on institutions' overall academic research and reputations and not on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs.
