The CIVIS summer school in Sapienza Università di Roma will be the second edition of the CIVIS initiative run in 2022 in Marseille.

The course, entirely in English, is coordinated by Ornella Tarola and intended for Ph.D. and Master's students interested in deepening their knowledge of the future of the EU. After the COVID crisis, Europe must face some new unavoidable challenges: it has to shape a future dealing with the war between Russia and Ukraine and its consequences on oil prices. In the aftermath of the pandemic crisis, the supply-chain bottlenecks, coupled with the unprecedented fiscal and monetary expansions, had already implied strains on the price level in most advanced economies. Today, these are further exacerbated by the effects of the war on energy and commodity prices, and climate change having the characteristics of a ‘global problem”

The first part of the School will be virtual. Before the virtual event, students will be provided with a Course Reading Packet consisting of some papers. Each paper will be related to a particular topic but centered around the key issues of the School. Students will be required to read the papers before the virtual events thereby choosing a topic they wish to disentangle.

At the beginning of the Summer School, the students will be divided into small groups depending on the topic they are willing to analyze and assigned to a professor. Each professor will give a lecture and after his/her lecture, he/she will discuss with the students some hot questions centering around their topic and based on the Course Reading Packet. These questions will help the groups to prepare a short dissertation and a presentation before the physical event takes place. Group presentations will take place during the physical event.

As far as the physical event, several parallel sessions will be organized. Students will attend some of them, depending on their interests. Then, groups will give presentations (based on their CIVIS dissertation). After the presentations, in light of the lectures given during the physical event, discussions involving all the students will occur.

Assessment

During the virtual phase of the course, students will be provided with a Course Reading Package containing several readings focusing on the issues the course will address. Taking inspiration from these readings, and with the help of supervisors from the School, students will select issues and form small working groups (2/3 students) for elaborating a final report (CIVIS dissertation). The report will be presented during the in-person phase of the course.

The final evaluation will take into account both students’ attendance at classes and the final report.

Blended Intensive Programme

This CIVIS course is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP): a new format of Erasmus+ mobility which combines online teaching with a short trip to another campus to learn alongside students and professors across Europe. Click here to learn more about CIVIS BIPs.
