Reclaiming (Feminist) Justice: three countries, three universities, one shared feminist memory Reclaiming (Feminist) Justice: three countries, three universities, one shared feminist memory ================================================================================================ CIVIS Highlights 8 juni 2026 Fifty years after the 1976 Brussels Tribunal on Crimes Against Women, a CIVIS-supported student initiative revives its legacy. The tribunal, which first exposed systemic violence against women on a global stage, helped shape feminist approaches to justice, memory, and transnational solidarity. Conceived as an academic and activist initiative, the *“*[*Reclaiming (Feminist) Justice”* project](https://civis.eu/sv/discover-civis-alliance/our-work/student-led-projects/discover-the-projects-led-by-our-students-in-2025-2026/reclaiming-feminist-justice) brought together exhibitions, study days, conferences and cultural events organised across Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. Far from being a mere commemoration, it was part of an international context marked by worrying setbacks in the rights of women and gender minorities. All of it while illustrating CIVIS’s commitment to interdisciplinary students projects rooted in contemporary societal issues and fostering dialogue between academic research, civil society and European citizens. A dedicated European team ------------------------- ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/fj3.jpg)The project is led by three doctoral students from CIVIS universities: - **Milène Le Goff**, a PhD candidate in history jointly supervised by the Université libre de Bruxelles and the University of Lilles, specializing in the 1976 International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women; - **Daniela Susarenco**, a PhD candidate in Peace Studies at la Sapienzà Università di Roma, in collaboration with Università dell’Insubria, and - **Justine Chatellard**, a PhD candidate in criminology at the University of Lausanne. > I launched this project with the desire to celebrate a key moment in feminism in Europe. CIVIS’ objectives strongly resonated with this ambition, making it possible to carry out a collective initiative on a transnational scale Milène le Goff At the time the project was being developed, Milène le Goff and Justine Châtellard were both living in the United States for their respective doctoral research. Justine highlights the impact of that experience: > Witnessing, from the US, major setbacks in reproductive rights and the rights of trans people gave this project a particular resonance. From that point on, commemorating the 1976 Tribunal could not be limited to an exercise in memory, especially as the violence that prompted it is still ongoing fifty years later. A series of events to reclaim feminist justice ---------------------------------------------- ### Rome, 16 January 2026: Opening event The opening event at La Sapienza Università di Roma, led by Daniela Susarenco and co-organized by Anna Micol Tropeano, Giorgia Di Giovanni and Martina Caslini as part of the PhD programme in *Peace Studies*, was structured around two thematic panels and a participatory workshop - bringing together researchers, legal experts and civil society actors. Discussions explored the legacy of women’s symbolic tribunals - from the Brussels Tribunal of 1976 of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal in collaboration with Fondazione Lelio e Lisli Basso – as well as restorative, transitional and transformative justice practices examined through a feminist and gender-based perspective. The afternoon workshop, *Feminist Justice in Practice*, presented the experience of the *Tribunale delle donne per le donne in migrazione* (Women’s Tribunal for Migrant Women) and was promoted by Casa Internazionale delle Donne. > Collaboration with the Casa Internazionale delle Donne - a feminist autonomous space that is at once a place of refuge, a hub for reflection on gender policies, and a centre for promoting women’s rights, culture, and knowledge - was essential. We built the event together, and it was a particularly meaningful learning experience for me as a young researcher Daniela Susarenco The workshop focused on concrete tools for feminist action, highlighting storytelling, legal advocacy, and documentary filmmaking as powerful instruments for justice and social transformation. The session also welcomed the participation of younger generations, with the collaboration of a local high school, fostering an active and engaging debate among students and participants alike. ### Lausanne, 27 February2026: Interdisciplinary day ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/fj2.jpg)The University of Lausanne organised a symposium dedicated to feminist memory, contemporary issues of gender justice, and the transnational circulation of feminist knowledge. Among the associations leading workshops numbered also Fondation Surgir and the Association Reconnaissance, committed to the creation of a commission for recognising sexual violence. As Justine Châtellard explains, “t*hese exchanges with civil society organisations, activists, and associations confirmed the importance of not confining knowledge production to the academic sphere alone if we want it to have real impact.”* Among the highlights of the day, the organiser particularly recalls a participatory workshop dedicated to forms of community-based and non-punitive justice. While a statement was projected on the screen, participants were invited to physically position themselves in the room according to their point of view. > This format proved particularly enriching, as it enabled an embodied exploration of the tensions surrounding the concept of transformative justice, the construction of shared understanding through open and respectful discussions, and a questioning of the binary thinking that often surrounds issues of justice. Justine Châtellard ### Bruxelles, March and April 2026: The symbolic heart ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/fj1.jpg)The Brussels segment constituted the symbolic and intellectual heart of the programme. It opened on 5 March with the inauguration of a photographic exhibition offering an immersive experience of the Tribunal’s visual and documentary archives. The event featured the presentation of Milène Le Goff’s new book, *Le Tribunal international des crimes contre les femmes. Un évènement fondateur du féminisme*, which traces the journeys of twenty witnesses who came forward to speak at the Tribunal. The academic highlight of the series took place on 25 March during the International Study Day at the Learning and Innovation Center (ULB/ VUB). It brought together thematic panels and testimonies to examine contemporary forms of expression, mobilisation, and feminist justice. This day was marked by a participatory workshop organised by OXO asbl in partnership with the RIFI (Réseau interculturel féministe et intersectionnel). The workshop explored the practical application of feminist methods in civic action, activism, and academia – an essential space for connecting theory and action, archives and current practices. The project was also part of the *Women2026 Tribunal*, a four-day event organized between Brussels and Antwerp. While Brussels hosted academic panels, Antwerp became a space for workshops, performances, debates, as well as ARTivist and ACTivist practices - thereby extending the project’s reach beyond academia. The programme concluded on 13 April with a screening of the film *Bandes d’hystériques* at Coin Culture (ULB), followed by a discussion with its director, Kita Bauchet. An adventure that goes beyond the academic world ------------------------------------------------ For Milène Le Goff, *“working together on this project was both a source of joy and intellectual stimulation. It echoed the spirit of the 1976 Tribunal, which was also based on collective action and the importance of mutual support.”* Justine Châtellard noted that those days *became spaces for unexpected and valuable encounters. \[…\] These connections, made possible by the project’s transnational dimension, go beyond the academic sphere: they now connect feminist actors across three countries, representing a concrete and lasting outcome of the project*”. By bringing together archives and knowledge, memory and contemporary mobilisation, artistic practices and research, the project opens up new perspectives for thinking about feminist justice today and affirms the political power of narratives that continue to shape how we understand, resist, and imagine the future.
