Join the enlightening first online lecture hosted by the University of Salzburg - Language Center, to explore how historical lessons from the multilingual Habsburg Monarchy resonate with present-day EU language policies.** From the multilingual Habsburg Empire in the 19th century to today’s EU, which is also committed to multilingualism and linguistic diversity. The journey begins with Napoleon and the reorganisation of Europe at the Congress of Vienna and it ends with the Austrian Imperial Council, the world’s first multinational parliament, a “League of Nations in miniature”. Two members of the Imperial Council, who would not be necessarily expected to be members of this body, are presented as examples. Similarities and differences to the language policy of today’s European Union, successes and challenges, aspirations and reality will be closely examined using concrete examples. Serious and humorous aspects on the subject of “multilingualism” will round off the lecture. Led by **Achim Braun**, this engaging first session will trace the evolution of multilingual governance from the Congress of Vienna to the formation of the Austrian Imperial Council—the world’s first truly multinational parliament. Dubbed a “League of Nations in miniature,” this historical model serves as a springboard to examine both parallels and divergences with modern EU linguistic practices. The lecture promises to blend historical depth with contemporary relevance, analysing successes and shortcomings in the EU's commitment to linguistic diversity. Alongside serious reflection, humorous anecdotes will add lightness to this critical discussion on multilingualism in European governance. This event is part of a public lecture series and does not require prior registration.
