Éloïse Gennet: a Civizen building an integrated European university Éloïse Gennet: a Civizen building an integrated European university ===================================================================== People 22 septembrie 2026 From expanding mobility opportunities to creating innovative joint study programmes, CIVIS is helping universities turn European collaboration into a daily reality. At Aix-Marseille University, one of the people driving this transformation is Éloïse Gennet, whose journey within the alliance reflects the tangible benefits it brings: greater international mobility, access to multidisciplinary learning experiences, stronger research partnerships and deeper European engagement. For Éloïse, a specialist in European Health Law and part of the amU’s CIVIS governance team, joining the alliance felt like a natural extension of her own academic and professional path. Long before becoming involved in the alliance, she had embraced international experiences across Europe, from studying in Germany and Switzerland to participating in European research projects with partners from around the world. These experiences reinforced her belief that internationalisation is not simply an added value, but an essential component of higher education and research. ![Éloïse Gennet, CIVIS Mission Officer for Aix-Marseille University.](https://civis.eu/storage/files/eloise-gennet.jpg) > Living abroad, experiencing new cultures in Europe, has always felt natural to me. This is why I believe in the internationalisation of research and education — it has shaped my whole education and career Éloïse Gennet, CIVIS Mission Officer for Aix-Marseille University. From faculty referent to university-wide coordinator ---------------------------------------------------- Éloïse’s CIVIS journey began in November 2022, when she became the Faculty of Law and Political Science’s CIVIS referent. In this role, she connected students, professors and professional staff with opportunities offered through the alliance, helping them navigate mobility programmes, international collaborations and educational initiatives. She also encouraged colleagues to teach in CIVIS programmes taught in English and coordinated the university’s participation in several Blended Intensive Programmes, creating new opportunities for students and academics to learn and collaborate across borders. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/eloise4.jpg)BIP in Rome, 2024 (personal archive).From promoting CIVIS opportunities within the Faculty of Law and Political Science to coordinating alliance-wide initiatives across the university, Éloïse has helped embed internationalisation into everyday academic life. As a natural consequence, three years after joining the team, her responsibilities expanded: she was appointed CIVIS Mission Officer for Aix-Marseille University. Working alongside Fabienne Michelini, the university’s Vice-President for the CIVIS Alliance, she became part of the team responsible for supporting the alliance’s development and strengthening its impact within the institution. > *This experience is absolutely fascinating – and all the more so for a scholar of European law. Coordinating an alliance with such ambitions, such contradictions and so many political crises reminds me of what a feat the European Union itself represents. I can’t help drawing a parallel with the birth of the European institutions: the initiative is just as ambitious – an integrated alliance of universities transforming its own institutions from within, and moving, every day, a little closer to its real objective, even if not always explicitly stated: the creation of a European university* Turning an ambition into daily practice --------------------------------------- CIVIS aims to be transformative: the goal is a genuinely integrated European university alliance. For Éloïse, that ambition translates into very concrete, often unglamorous work – negotiated department by department. In fact, beyond supporting the team that coordinates the alliance, her role is, more specifically, to help CIVIS take root within Aix-Marseille University itself – an essentially internal task: **making internationalisation part of the university’s fabric, so that mobility becomes the norm for every student and staff member, multilingualism becomes standard, and cultural and civic exchange become part of everyday university life.** Among her day-to-day objectives is finding ways around national obstacles so that CIVIS can keep growing. With amU’s education departments, for instance, she is helping design a framework for micro-credentials – a first of its kind in France – or a shared framework for joint doctoral programmes. ![Éloïse Gennet, CIVIS Mission Officer for Aix-Marseille University.](https://civis.eu/storage/files/eloise-gennet.jpg) > Every day I discover the complexity and the subtlety of the balances, sometimes the power dynamics, between what is technical, operational, legal, administrative, human and political Éloïse Gennet, CIVIS Mission Officer for Aix-Marseille University. Building bridges, twice over ---------------------------- Beyond these day-to-day frameworks, Éloïse also has a project of her own within CIVIS. In January 2026, she launched an LLM (Master of Law) in [*One Health in European and International Law* ](https://dice.univ-amu.fr/fr/node/322)– an online, English-language diploma exploring how law should respond to the fact that human, animal and environmental health are inseparable. Several CIVIS partners, from Lausanne to Glasgow, already teach within it; her ambition now is to turn it into a fully joint CIVIS degree. It is, in many ways, the same instinct at work twice over: just as *One Health* refuses to treat human, animal and environmental health as separate silos, CIVIS refuses to treat Europe’s universities as separate from one another.
