Romance Language Cafe Romance Language Cafe ======================= Type of event Language cafe Format Online Open to CIVIS community Date 18 sept. → 11 dec. 2025 - [About the event](#tab-about) - [Speakers](#tab-speakers) - [Practical information](#tab-practical_information) **Do you speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, or another Romance language at B1 level or higher? ¡Bienvenidos! – Bem-vindos! – Bienvenus! – Benvenuti! – Bine ai venit! Whether you're a learner or a native speaker – this space is for you!** Between **18 September - 11 December**, Språkstudion Language Learning Resource Centre at Stockholm University and Sprachenzentrum at University of Salzburg organise on **each Thursday** the ***Romance Language Cafe** -* an event bringing together students who speak any Romance language for a plurilingual exchange: you speak Italian, your conversation partner speaks French, someone else speaks Romanian – and you can still understand each other. ### How is that possible? Thanks to their common origin, Romance languages have similar vocabulary (e.g. es. universidad, pt. universidad, fr. université, it. università, ro. universitate) and comparable grammar structures, i.e. a high degree of mutual intelligibility – even if you’ve never studied the other language. Improve your language skills and discover new Romance languages --------------------------------------------------------------- The *Romance Language Cafe* helps you practice expressing yourself clearly and accessibly, even for people who don’t speak your exact language. You’ll develop cross-language communication strategies, such as: - slowing down your speech - repeating and paraphrasing words and phrases - using words with shared roots across languages - supporting your speech with gestures or visual cues Whether you're brushing up your language skills, exploring new varieties, or just curious about how far Romance-language understanding can go — [join us](https://stockholmuniversity.zoom.us/j/66422412472) and be part of a plurilingual experience! The event is led by **Dr. Cristoph Hülsmann, Senior Scientist at *Sprachenzentrum***. All students and staff at CIVIS universities are welcome to participate. The Romance Language Cafe takes place **every Thursday** between **18 September - 11 December** from **2:00 to 2:50 P.M. (CEST)**. No registration required.
