Sustainable Research Initiative Moves Forward at the University of Lausanne

CIVIS Highlights

22 maggio 2026

Delivering concrete recommendations for rigorous and sustainable research by 2037, through a participatory process involving the research community and key institutional partners. This is the aim of the Sustainable Research Initiative, launched by the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne.

The initiative, developed in partnership with CHUV, Unisanté and the Jules-Gonin Ophthalmic Hospital, builds on the University of Lausanne’s CAP2037 strategy. Its objective is to define both a strategic vision and practical measures that reconcile scientific excellence with respect for planetary boundaries.

Running until June 2026, the process will culminate in a final report outlining a shared vision and operational recommendations to guide the Faculty’s sustainable research strategy toward 2037.

A participatory and inclusive approach

At the core of the initiative is a participatory methodology involving a representative panel that reflects the diversity of the research community across the faculty and its partner institutions. This inclusive approach ensures that multiple perspectives contribute to shaping the future of sustainable research.

First session: setting the foundation

The first session, held in January, established the methodological framework, reaffirmed the institutional commitment of all partners, and launched a collective reflection on sustainable research in a rapidly changing global context.

Discussions focused on key issues such as the environmental and social impacts of research, the tensions between scientific demands and systemic constraints, and the conditions necessary to ensure sustainable practices.

Second session: advancing the analysis

A second session in February marked a significant step forward. It focused on analysing existing initiatives, examining the impacts of research activities, and exploring questions related to infrastructure and research practices. This phase has helped deepen the panel’s work and refine its perspectives.

Towards a shared vision for 2037

Through this initiative, the University of Lausanne is fostering a collective reflection on how research can remain both excellent and responsible in the face of global challenges. The final outcomes will play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable research practices within the institution and beyond.
