An exciting journey through time to discover the fascinating history of Earth awaits the visitors.
Museums for Education and Research
This was the name chosen by the NKUA for this year's celebration of International Museum Day. Events and activities were organised at the university's Museums and Special Collections.
The Athens University History Museum participated in the celebrations with paper theatre and guided tours, while the Museum of Archaeology and History of Art offered to its visitors an interactive tour of the Museum’s Educational Collections.
The long history of the 18 Museums of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens began barely one year after the establishment of the University, in 1837. The initial goal was to form collections of objects for educational purposes. The first “Collection of Instruments” contained objects for laboratory teaching of surgery, physical sciences, and mathematics.
Nowadays, the museums continue their educational work, allowing the public to come into contact with collections unique in Greece and worldwide. The interesting path that each of the University Museums follows individually testifies, at the same time, to the history of University education in Greece", stated Prof. Gerasimos Siasos, the Rector of the NKUA.
