Tracing carbon in Greenland’s melting fjords Tracing carbon in Greenland’s melting fjords ============================================== CIVIS Highlights 28 septembre 2026 Melting glaciers carry more than water, but where does it all end up? This was the central question guiding the GREENCARB expedition - a project which brought together a large group of researchers from the Bolin Centre for Climate Research and Stockholm University, curious to find out how melting glaciers are changing carbon cycling, marine ecosystems and greenhouse-gas emissions. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/greencarb7.jpg)photo © Flor VermassenFrom 26 August to 9 September, researchers in oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, geology, atmospheric science and climate science travelled through Greenland’s fjords, collecting water, sediment and biological samples. A large proportion of those on board of the research vessel RV Skagerak were PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and other early-career researchers (ECRs), giving the expedition a strong focus on the next generation of climate scientists. Following carbon from the ice sheet to the sea ---------------------------------------------- As Greenland’s glaciers retreat, the landscape around them is changing rapidly. Glaciers expose new areas of seafloor and land as they withdraw, while meltwater carries organic and inorganic matter from below the glacier and eroded soils into the surrounding fjords. These processes can have very different consequences for the climate system. Newly exposed soils and seafloor sediment may capture and store carbon, while organic material transported into the ocean can be respired and potentially contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions. At the same time, meltwater influences ocean circulation, nutrient availability and biological production. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/greencarb4.jpg)photo © Flor VermassenThe [GREENCARB](https://www.su.se/english/research/research-catalogue/research-projects/5/greencarb) team is studying these processes across a natural gradient, from fjords where glaciers still reach the ocean to areas where glaciers have already retreated onto land. By combining observations from different parts of the fjord system, the researchers aim to understand how the different processes interact. The team also collected sediment cores that preserve a record of past environmental conditions. These archives will allow researchers to investigate how fjord ecosystems and carbon cycling have changed as glaciers have retreated since the last Ice Age. > *True multidisciplinary work is sometimes viewed as a burden. In our case, we turned it into an advantage – when conditions don’t allow for one type of work, they’re often suitable for another. For example, time needed to process water samples was used to scout for coring sites. Similarly, when the whole team was tied up processing samples on one occasion, we ended up in an area that turned out to be great for seafloor mapping – and used the available time window to reveal previously unknown glacial features”,* says Flor Vermassen, co-chief scientist A field laboratory for the next generation of climate researchers ----------------------------------------------------------------- GREENCARB is particularly notable for the number of young researchers involved. PhD students, postdocs and other ECRs took active roles in leading the expedition, developing the project and sampling. For the researchers at an early stage of their careers, the expedition was also an opportunity to experience Arctic fieldwork while working closely with scientists approaching the same climate-related questions from very different perspectives. > *I find that being at sea always changes the way you think about your research: observations and discussions happen in real time, and sometimes you realize that the most interesting questions are not exactly the ones you arrived with. GREENCARB provided a particular good environment for this kind of scientific exchange”,* says Julie Lattaud, chief scientist The interdisciplinary approach is central to GREENCARB – and reflects the broad research carried out within the [Bolin Centre for Climate Research](https://www.su.se/english/divisions/bolin-centre-for-climate-research/research/research-themes). The project is supported by all four of the Bolin Centre Research Themes, bringing together expertise spanning the climate system, its physical and chemical processes, biological interactions and past and future changes. Rather than studying individual components of the Arctic system in isolation, the researchers are therefore able to examine connections between glaciers, the ocean, sediments, ecosystems and the carbon cycle. Sketching science at sea ------------------------ The research team was not alone in documenting the expedition. Artist Siddharth Jain joined R/V Skagerak for the two-week journey, sketchbook in hand, to capture the people, research and everyday life on board. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/greencarb1.jpg)*“Onboard Skagerak.”* Illustration © Siddharth JainRather than simply documenting the scientific work, Jain [used drawing](https://www.gu.se/en/news/greenland-through-an-artists-eyes-aboard-rv-skagerak) as a way to observe the expedition and the people behind it. His sketches offer another way of seeing the expedition – focusing not only on the scientific work, but also on the people, landscapes and everyday experiences behind it: *“Drawing became a way of slowing down and observing details that might otherwise disappear when so much is happening at once”,* recalls the artist. From samples at sea to new climate knowledge -------------------------------------------- The expedition builds on [fieldwork carried out in the region](https://www.su.se/english/news/articles/2025-06-26-to-greenland-by-sailboat) in 2024 and 2025, which showed that neighbouring fjords can have markedly different physical and biogeochemical characteristics. The new samples and measurements will allow the researchers to expand this picture across a larger geographical area and investigate changes over much longer timescales. Much of the scientific work will now continue back on shore, as researchers analyse the samples and combine the new observations with data from previous expeditions. > *The sea surface temperature measurements done on board show a marked difference between the two main fjords explored and seems to be strongly linked to bathymetry with warmer water present in the most restricted fjord. In the fjord that had the most icebergs and still has a marine-terminating glacier we observed more methane at the air-sea interface than in the fjord that had already deglaciated”,* explains Julie Lattaud, chief scientist The results will contribute to a better understanding of how the rapidly changing Greenland Ice Sheet may affect the Arctic carbon cycle – and how changes taking place in the Arctic can in turn influence the wider climate system. ### More details available on SU's website.
