Sapienza Università di Roma, in collaboration with Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the University of Bucharest and the NK University of Athens, is organising a webinar on diabetic cardiomyopathy on Friday 8 July 2022 from 15:00 to 19:30 CEST. The event is open to students and academics at CIVIS member universities.
Clinical and metabolic features of people with diabetes vary considerably, which translates in a heterogeneous risk of diabetes-related complications. In this regard, people with slowly progressive autoimmune diabetes, a type 1 diabetes endotype mimicking type 2 diabetes, have a different risk of microvascular complications and of cardiac autonomic neuropathy, but not of atherosclerotic events, compared to people with type 2 diabetes. This might have significant implications for diabetic heart disease, which results, from a complex interaction between coronary micro and macro-circulation, neuroimmune control and cardiomyopathy. As the pathophysiology and metabolic derangements differ, in-depth knowledge of the differences in heart disease and its risk factors within different diabetes endotypes will significantly contribute to ameliorating the complication risk stratification and will allow personalization of treatment strategies.
This webinar aims to facilitate the knowledge about morpho-functional, biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying the heterogeneity of diabetic cardiomyopathy, with the final aim of gathering under one roof the European excellence working on this topic. This will provide opportunities for students to be introduced by high-level scientists to a hot topic in cardiovascular disease, and for researchers to create novel collaborations allowing a full description of different diabetic heart phenotypes and their determinants, in relation to the different pathophysiology and metabolic derangements characterizing the heterogeneity of diabetes.
