CIVIS seeks to support joint research among its member institutions and beyond European borders. CIVIS connects 11 research-oriented member universities in Europe with strategic partner universities in Africa, which jointly design educational offers, foster mobility of staff and students, and promote a socially engaged academy.

In that framework, last spring CIVIS invited through a "Seed funding Call for research activities and African-European collaboration", faculty members and researchers to submit their proposals for initiating new collaborative research projects or the preparation of applications for larger research grants. CIVIS’s missions and values are closely connected to major societal challenges, such as the fields of Climate, Environment, Energy, Society, Culture, Heritage, Health, Cities, Spaces, Mobilities and Digital & Technological Transformation which are linked as well to the UN Sustainable development goals.

Within the Seed funding Call for joint research activities, 25 new projects were approved and will be funded from the Call. The new projects that will be launched tackle various societal challenges, have a research dimension and are thematically related to different interdisciplinary areas aiming to establish a longer-lasting collaboration among the participants.
