Addressing the social challenge of preserving and revitalizing Scottish Gaelic

Due to the lack of studies on Scottish Gaelic complex sentences, this project intends to carry out research on the formation and use of Scottish Gaelic complex sentences within the perspective of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), a moderate functional linguistic theory, with the aim of contributing to the documentation, preservation, and revitalization of this endangered Celtic language.

Main Beneficiaries & Social Impact

Main Beneficiaries

The main beneficiaries of the results of this project will be scholars, teachers and learners, and speakers of the Scottish Gaelic language.

Social Impact

The main results of this project are the publication of a grammar book on Scottish Gaelic complex sentences with a focus on diatopic variation, and the creation and design of teaching and learning materials by using ICT tools. Thus, this will make an impact on society because it will benefit Scottish Gaelic speakers and learners as well as academia.

Core Methodology

The project will consist of three different stages: Documentation of Scottish Gaelic complex sentences, Sociolinguistic study of geographical variation in the formation and use of complex sentences in different regions of Scotland, Creation and design of traditional and modern teaching and learning materials.
