The CIVIS Summer School aims to provide students with a multidisciplinary intensive education on medical ultrasound imaging. As ultrasound technology is increasingly used in the majority of clinical specialties, knowledge of the basic principles as well as of state-of-the-art and emerging concepts of ultrasound imaging is important for both biomedical scientists and clinicians as well as for engineers.

Main topics addressed

The main topics addressed during this CIVIS course include:

  • Basic principles of ultrasound and medical ultrasound imaging
  • Diagnostic applications of ultrasound in Cardiology, Radiology, Respiratory Medicine, and Paediatrics
  • Image-guided applications of ultrasound
  • Ultrasound image analysis and artificial intelligence
  • Medical ultrasound innovation and health technology assessment

Learning outcomes

By taking this CIVIS course, students will:

  • Gain a multidisciplinary insight into ultrasound, one of the fastest developing medical imaging modalities, including its technological background and its clinical applications
  • Understand the basic principles of ultrasound, and learn how it can be used to yield images of the human body
  • Learn how ultrasound can be used in clinical diagnosis and image-guided therapy
  • Understand health technology assessment and innovation issues related to medical ultrasound
  • Learn to work in an international multidisciplinary environment

Assessment

Participating students will be assessed based on group work and presentation on the final day of the Summer School.

The group work will be organised as follows:

Students will be given a topic to study before the start of the course. At the beginning of the course, students will be divided into small groups, with common topics. Each topic will be discussed within one or more lectures of the course. The student groups will meet 4 times during the course, to discuss their topic and prepare a presentation. They will present their work on the final day of Summer School.
