A CIVIS Open Lab project unites displaced voices from Madrid, Glasgow and Johannesburg in a powerful e-book on home and belonging, transforming art into civic action and reshaping migration narratives through participatory storytelling.

**From Global Displacement to Personal Voice**
----------------------------------------------

By mid-2025, 117.3 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced, nearly 42.5 million of them refugees. The figures are staggering. Yet in public debate, migration is too often framed through alarmist metaphors—“waves,” “invasions,” “hordes”—that flatten human complexity into political rhetoric.

Within that context, storytelling becomes an act of restoration.

The **CIVIS Open Lab project** [***“Migrant Storytelling on Home and Belonging as Transformative Tools”* (2024–2025)**](https://civis.eu/es/discover-civis-alliance/our-work/open-labs-civic-engagement/migrant-storytelling-about-home-and-belonging-as-a-transformative-tool) was conceived as a response to this narrative imbalance. Developed by researchers from [Universidad Autónoma de Madrid](https://civis.eu/en/discover-civis-alliance/what-is-civis/universidad-autonoma-de-madrid), [University of Glasgow](https://civis.eu/en/discover-civis-alliance/what-is-civis/university-of-glasgow) and [University of the Witwatersrand](https://civis.eu/en/discover-civis-alliance/what-is-civis/university-of-the-witwatersrand-johannesburg), in partnership with [CEAR](https://www.cear.es/) (Comisión Española de Ayuda al Refugiado), [Migrant Voice](https://www.migrantvoice.org/) and the [Windybrow Arts Centre](https://marketartscentre.co.za/), the initiative created safe, participatory spaces where displaced individuals could narrate home and belonging on their own terms.

The resulting open-access e-book gathers 60 artistic works by adults who have resettled in Madrid, Glasgow and Johannesburg. Contributors come from Morocco, Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Iran, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Sudan, Palestine, Mali and Guinea Conakry. Their mediums vary—poetry, photography, drawing, textiles—but their focus converges: what it means to lose, remember, and rebuild home.

The project builds on earlier initiatives such as [*EverydayMayfair*](https://www.urbantransformations.ox.ac.uk/blog/2019/4861/) (2017), [*The Meaning of Home. A toolkit for storytelling interventions with migrant children*.](https://nereidariperomuniz.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/booklet-the-meaning-of-home-interactive-202407111155-sd-2.pdf) (2024), and [*All Roads Lead to Glasgow* ](https://www.whatsonglasgow.co.uk/event/130364-all-roads-lead-to-glasgow-book-launch/)(2023), extending their local insights into a transnational dialogue. Inspired by the creative communities of [Migrant Voice Gallery](https://migrantvoicegallery.org/zine-poster-show/), CEAR and the Windybrow Arts Centre, the e-book positions displaced individuals not as subjects of research, but as authors of their own narratives.

> This project made us rethink the usual roles in academia. We did not enter the workshops as experts there to teach. Instead, we helped create a space where everyone could learn from each other. Listening to participants speak about home, belonging, and resilience changed our own perspectives in meaningful ways. For us, this is what civic engagement truly means: not outreach from above, but real collaboration

Francisco Fuentes-Antrás, PI and Madrid coordinator

**Workshops as Civic Laboratories**
-----------------------------------

Between May and August 2025, creative workshops unfolded in deeply rooted community venues: [La Corrala](https://www.uam.es/uam/lacorrala) in Madrid, [the Garnethill Multicultural Centre ](https://www.garnethillmc.co.uk/)in Glasgow, and [the Windybrow Arts Centre](https://marketartscentre.co.za/) in Johannesburg.

![Mirna Šolić, Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature, Glasgow co-ordinator](https://civis.eu/storage/files/mirna-solic-ols-project-on-migration-storytelling.jpg)

> Projects like this one was a fantastic opportunity for our participants to use creative practices to reflect on their own sense of belonging and to share what it feels like to ‘home’ yourself in a new environment. The exhibition displayed as part of the Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival was a unique opportunity to meet fellow residents of Glasgow who normally they would not meet in their daily life and social circles... Our next exhibition, as well as the e-book launch will take place during Glasgow Science Festival and Glasgow Refugee Week in June 2026, and will be an opportunity for the entire team, including the project participants to reconvene and decide how to take this further

Mirna Šolić, Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature, Glasgow co-ordinator

Each workshop hosted no more than fourteen participants, ensuring personal guidance and emotional safety. Sessions were structured around three narrative elements—character, object and plot—always anchored in the theme of home and belonging. Participants were free to express themselves textually, orally or visually, in multiple languages, regardless of artistic background.

Home emerged as both dwelling and emotion; both memory and aspiration. For many, it was a fluid space—partly anchored in the past, partly projected into a hoped-for future. The trauma of forced abandonment was palpable, yet so too was resilience.

Trained facilitators with expertise in art therapy and psychological support ensured trauma-sensitive engagement. Participation was voluntary, anonymised where needed, and supported by ongoing communication. Anonymous feedback underscored the workshops’ healing dimension: art became not only expression, but containment and connection.

**Transnational Dialogue, Tangible Impact**
-------------------------------------------

Migration is a defining issue in Spain, the United Kingdom and South Africa—three contexts with different legal systems, social dynamics and political debates. Spain and the UK operate within structured European asylum frameworks; South Africa faces resource constraints and entrenched socio-economic inequalities. Xenophobic discourses differ in tone and intensity.

Yet across these differences, participants’ reflections on home revealed striking parallels: food as memory, nature as refuge, keys as symbols, (un)safe spaces as emotional markers. By organising the e-book thematically rather than geographically, the project underscores migration as a shared human experience shaped by distinct political realities.

For CIVIS, the added value is substantial. This Open Lab initiative:

- Transforms the university alliance into a **civic actor**, not merely an academic consortium.
- Bridges **Europe and Africa** in equitable knowledge production.
- Strengthens partnerships between **universities and grassroots** organisations.
- Provides a replicable **pedagogical model** for participatory, arts-based research.
- Contributes to **social cohesion** by fostering intercultural dialogue in polarised environments.
- Enriches public discourse by humanising migration beyond policy abstractions.

Its open-access format ensures that these voices circulate freely, extending the project’s societal reach beyond the cities in which it was created.

![Nereida Ripero- Muñiz, Johannesburg coordinator](https://civis.eu/storage/files/nereida-ripero-muniz-ols-project-on-migration.jpg)

> Art-based methodologies foster a more open dialogue with migrants and underserved communities, allowing them to share their experiences of home and belonging on their own terms without the constraints of external theories. This project offers a compelling comparative perspective: Johannesburg, Glasgow, and Madrid serve as distinct urban contexts where migrants face diverse challenges and opportunities, reflecting the multifaceted nature of global mobility

Nereida Ripero- Muñiz, Johannesburg coordinator

Project Team and Contributors
-----------------------------

The CIVIS Open Lab project was developed through collaboration between academics, community organisations and creative practitioners across Spain, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Together, they combined research expertise, community engagement and artistic facilitation to support participatory storytelling with displaced communities.

Ultimately, *Home as Story, Stories of Home* is more than an artistic compilation. It is a civic intervention. It demonstrates how universities can convene, listen and amplify; how art can rehumanise public debate; and how belonging—though politically contested—remains a universal human need.

In a world of 117.3 million displaced lives, sixty voices speak here. And in listening to them, we are reminded that there are no distant worlds—only stories waiting to be recognised.

### Home as story. Stories from home. Transformations of belonging

This e-book consists of a total of 60 artistic works created by forcibly displaced people over the age of eighteen, who settled in Glasgow, Johannesburg, and Madrid, and from a diverse range of nationalities including Morocco, Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Iran, Yemen, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Sudan, Palestine, Mali, and Guinea Conakry.
