Currently pursuing dual Master’s degrees at Sapienza Università di Roma and the University of Tuscia, he embodies a generation of students navigating complex, interdisciplinary paths. His longstanding commitment to scouting complements this journey, reflecting values of responsibility, resilience, and community engagement that subtly inform his academic and European experiences. From a first-year undergraduate stepping into his first international research environment to representing a European University alliance within one of the largest universities in Europe, **Ernesto’s journey illustrates how a single academic opportunity can evolve into a transformative European experience.** In this Civizen story, Ernesto shares how curiosity, international cooperation, and the courage to step beyond one’s comfort zone can turn a simple academic opportunity into a gateway to Europe’s evolving university landscape. “My name is Ernesto, I am 22 years old, and I am currently enrolled in two Master’s degree programmes: one in Food Science and Technology, delivered by the University of Tuscia at Sapienza, and the other in Management of Gastronomic Sciences for Wellbeing at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of Sapienza. My academic path began with a Bachelor’s degree in Sciences, Cultures and Gastronomic Policies for Wellbeing. In my life, I have been a scout for 14 years, since I was 9 years old”. ### Meet the civizens around you! [Discover them](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom?tag%5B%5D=37) **Love at first BIP** --------------------- Ernesto’s introduction to the CIVIS Alliance came during his first undergraduate year. In a tourism geography course led by Professor Barbara Staniscia, students were presented with a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP): a summer mobility experience in Bucharest dedicated to exploring the relationship between tourism and landscapes. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/first-meeting-with-students-and-professors-at-civis-bip-at-unibuc.jpg)First meeting with students and professors during a CIVIS BIP in Bucharest.“At that moment, CIVIS was simply an interesting academic opportunity. I did not yet realize that it would become one of the most transformative experiences of my university journey”. What initially appeared as an enriching academic add-on would soon become a defining turning point. ### **A First European Research Experience** Participating in the BIP in Bucharest at the end of his first year felt, in Ernesto’s words, “like stepping into the unknown — in the best possible way”. With only two familiar colleagues and no prior international research experience, he entered a truly European academic environment, working alongside students, researchers, and professors from diverse institutions. “It was my first real European research experience”. For the first time, Ernesto explains, he no longer felt like “just” a student — but like a researcher. Fieldwork, theoretical engagement with concepts such as “touristscapes,” and interdisciplinary collaboration within mixed international teams transformed abstract knowledge into lived academic practice. ![Ernesto Lamagna](https://civis.eu/storage/files/ernesto-civizen-story-sur.jpg) > The most powerful moment for me was the field research itself. We all came from different academic backgrounds and carried similar doubts and anxieties. Yet we shared a common goal. Months of online collaboration had prepared us theoretically and methodologically, but in Bucharest those foundations turned into real research practice Ernesto Lamagna This experience exceeded his expectations. The group’s work was published as a chapter in an English-language anthology — a rare achievement for first-year students. “This is not something that happens every day — especially not during the first year of university. It strengthened my confidence and confirmed that the academic path I had chosen was the right one. It allowed me to envision my future with greater clarity and ambition”.** **From Participant to Ambassador** ---------------------------------- Following this formative experience, a colleague Ernesto had met in Bucharest from the University of Salzburg encouraged him to apply to become a [CIVIS Ambassador](https://civis.eu/en/i-am-a-student#5-student-ambassadors). After a competitive interview process, he embarked on a new chapter of engagement. Serving as an Ambassador at Sapienza Università di Roma — an institution with over 130,000 students — is, as he describes, both an honour and a challenge. In such a vast academic community, opportunities can easily remain invisible. Raising awareness about CIVIS became a central mission. Over the past two years, Ernesto has contributed to initiatives designed to enhance visibility and accessibility: **social media campaigns such as #festivecivis, account takeovers, presentations during Erasmus events, and broader outreach activities.** Each initiative represented a small but meaningful step toward bringing the alliance closer to students. ![Ernesto Lamagna](https://civis.eu/storage/files/ernesto-civizen-story-sur.jpg) > There was a specific moment when I truly understood that I was representing something bigger than myself. During a presentation for students interested in Erasmus opportunities, as I spoke about my own experience, I realized that I was not simply sharing a personal story. I was representing a broader European vision of higher education — a network built on cooperation, mobility, and shared research Ernesto Lamagna In that realisation, personal narrative merged with collective mission. “In that moment, I felt both responsibility and pride. I was no longer just a participant; **I had become a bridge between students and a wider European project**”, he recalls. “For me, CIVIS has not only been an academic opportunity. It has been proof that a European university is not just an idea — it is a lived experience.” ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/civis-bip-group-during-the-visit-in-castle-of-peles-october-2023.jpg)CIVIS BIP group during the visit in Castle of Peles.**Challenges That Shape Growth** -------------------------------- Promoting CIVIS within a large and multifaceted institution demanded more than enthusiasm. “I learned how to communicate complex opportunities clearly and effectively, how to understand students’ needs, and how to translate the idea of a European alliance into tangible possibilities.” The role strengthened his organisational skills, intercultural awareness, and capacity to collaborate within diverse teams. Most significantly, it reshaped his understanding of internationalisation itself. “Internationalization is not only about physical mobility. It is about mindset: openness, collaboration, and the willingness to engage with different perspectives to create something meaningful together.” **Looking Ahead** ----------------- Ernesto’s experience with CIVIS has left a lasting imprint on his ambitions. “It brought me closer to the world of international research, highlighted the importance of European academic networks, and equipped me with concrete tools to navigate complex academic environments”. Today, he aspires to continue working in international and interdisciplinary contexts where cooperation is central. “CIVIS has shown me that higher education can truly transcend borders”. To students hesitating before applying for a BIP or an Ambassador role, his message is both reassuring and resolute:“You do not need to feel fully ready. Growth begins the moment you step outside your comfort zone.
