This CIVIS statement reflects on the role of higher education during the COVID-19 crisis and the lessons learned by CIVIS universities. It highlights five strategic areas for strengthening universities as spaces of stability, innovation, inclusion and civic engagement.
The Beyond the Turbulences: Higher Education as Factor of Stability statement explores how universities can respond to periods of crisis while maintaining their essential role in education and society.
Drawing on the experiences of CIVIS universities during the COVID-19 pandemic, the statement identifies five priorities: scenario-based governance, quality and equal access to education, stronger digital support systems, student and staff well-being, and innovation in pedagogy. It calls for more flexible and responsive approaches to higher education, combining digital transformation, innovative learning and civic engagement.
