The Doctorate is the level of study that seeks to train new researchers, something fundamental to the development of a knowledge-based society. Today, the concept of a doctoral education is not limited simply to the completion of a doctoral thesis or to activities assigned to a single area of knowledge. The need for future doctors to acquire a series of transferable skills (“soft skills”) to help them successfully face different scenarios in their professional lives and to be leaders in a changing world is becoming increasingly evident.
Objectives
The objective of this symposium is to help doctoral students develop several of these transversal skills, as seen in the document Eurodoc Report (2018), including effective communication, teamwork, innovation, critical thinking, and the ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts and crisis situations, among others. In this sense, the course is aligned with UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) # 4, which refers to Quality Education.
Participants
Doctoral students from any discipline and branch of knowledge studying at the Doctoral School of the Autonomous University of Madrid (EDUAM), various Latin American universities affiliated with the International Academic Program, and CIVIS partner universities, are invited to apply. The maximum number of participants will be 30. The doctoral students should be at least in their third year of doctoral studies and have an English level equal to C1.
Methodology
Each session will include theoretical lessons with case studies, resolution of problems, and group work. In addition, all students will participate in a communication activity and assignment in which they must transmit information in a concise, fast and simple way to a heterogeneous audience.
All symposium materials will be provided before the symposium. Active participation is expected of all students. Sessions and all discussions will be conducted in English.
