Defined by the European Commission as “transnational alliances of higher education institutions, paving the way towards the universities of the future”, European Universities alliances are an essential part of a flagship initiative of the European strategy for universities. A total of 73 European Universities alliances with almost 650 higher education institutions from all corners of Europe are part of the European Universities initiative (EUI).
Building Sustainable Alliances for a Stronger European Higher Education
The European Universities initiative is designed to foster long-term, structural and strategic cooperation among higher education institutions across Europe. By creating sustainable partnerships within these alliances, the initiative seeks to:
- Enhance the international competitiveness of European universities
- Promote European values and identity
Through these collaborations, students have the unique opportunity to pursue degrees that combine studies in several European countries, enriching their academic and cultural experience.
This ambitious initiative has the potential to deliver benefits to higher education institutions that go far beyond those achieved by previous cooperation projects.
CIVIS: A Pioneer of the Initiative
As one of the first 17 European Universities, CIVIS has been a trailblazer in this transformative initiative. Since 2017, we have been working to create an inter-university campus connecting our member universities. This ambitious project aims to:
- Boost mobility for students, academics and administrative staff
- Strengthen collaboration among researchers, companies, NGOs and other actors to address society’s most pressing challenges
Together, we are designing a new university model that is inclusive, diverse and deeply rooted in civic engagement, paving the way for a more connected and responsible European higher education landscape.
FOREU4ALL, a Community of Practice
FOREU4ALL, an initiative of the European University Alliances, provides a collaborative and supportive platform where all 73 alliances come together to share best practices, exchange experiences, and strengthen cooperation. CIVIS participates actively in the topical groups and other activities.
The community fosters a deeper collaboration by facilitating learning, joint initiatives, and the dissemination of results – enhancing knowledge, skills, and effectiveness of the entire higher education sector.
