Responding to the Far Right: Local Challenges, Global Perspectives Responding to the Far Right: Local Challenges, Global Perspectives ==================================================================== One of the key challenges facing democracies today is the rise of the far right. While this is a global challenge, the local level is particularly important: it is where far-right actors often first gain influence, test new strategies, and shape public debate. At the same time, local communities are the first line of democratic self-defence. While researchers have developed evidence on possible responses, local practitioners often face different realities on the ground. Too often, these two perspectives remain disconnected. Our two-day Open Lab workshop brought together researchers and students from different European countries (Greece, Germany, Belgium, Austria and Scottland) with local practitioners—including politicians, trade unionists, activists, and civil society organisations—to exchange knowledge and learn from one another. Participants discussed different strategies for responding to the far right, reflected on their strengths and limitations, and explored how they could be applied in local contexts. The overarching goal was to develop practical, democratic, and evidence-informed approaches that strengthen local communities and build lasting connections between research and practice. Main Beneficiaries & Social Impact --------------------------------------- ### Main Beneficiaries The project targetted researchers, students, civil society organisations, local politicians, activists, trade unionists, and other practitioners working on or affected by the rise of the far right. Around 40 participants took part in the two-day workshop. Participation was based on targeted invitations and network outreach, ensuring a balance between academic expertise and local practical experience. Beneficiaries engaged through interactive workshops, case-based group discussions, and co-creation sessions designed to foster direct exchange and collaboration. ### Social Impact Participants benefited from knowledge exchange between research and practice, gaining new perspectives, practical tools, and strengthened analytical and strategic skills. The workshop also built networks across sectors and countries, enabling longer-term collaboration. Social impact was reflected in improved capacity to respond to far-right actors at the local level, greater awareness of effective and ethical strategies, and stronger connections between academia and practitioners. In the longer term, the project can contribute to more coordinated, evidence-informed, and democratically grounded responses to the far right. Core Methodology ------------------ The project used a participatory co-creation approach, bringing together researchers and local practitioners through interactive workshops, case discussions, and collaborative reflection. International research is combined with practical experience to develop, test, and adapt evidence-informed strategies for responding to the far right in local contexts. Take-Aways ----------- The workshop showed the value of bringing research and practice into direct dialogue on responses to the far right. For researchers, the exchange helped sharpen research questions and better align them with real-world challenges. International researchers gained important insights into local dynamics, everyday dilemmas, counter-strategies developed in practice, and the trade-offs involved in choosing between different approaches. Across sessions, participants from different sectors—civil society, local politics, and trade unions—shared distinct perspectives. Trade union contributions, for example, highlighted how far-right narratives and actors are encountered and addressed in the workplace. Real-world dilemmas helped translate abstract strategies into concrete decision-making. Overall, participants emphasized that no single approach works in all contexts, and that effective responses require continuous reflection and adaptation to local conditions. Participants described the workshop as a very pleasant and open working environment that enabled constructive exchange across disciplines and sectors. Many highlighted the richness of the discussions and the value of engaging with different perspectives from different contexts and countries, noting that different strategies are needed and effective in different institutional contexts. Despite extreme heat conditions (over 40°C), participants remained highly engaged throughout the two-day programme and actively contributed to all sessions. The sustained participation was seen as an indicator of the relevance of the topic and the strong interest in continued exchange between research and practice.
