Clinical and experimental results indicate that the experience of aversive environmental conditions is the prominent non-genetic cause of mental discomfort and illness. Individuals possess behavioural strategies and neurophysiological responses that enable them to cope and protect themselves from the dangerous outcomes of stressful experiences. When these defence mechanisms work properly we can talk about resilience, the ability to efficiently cope with adversities.

The course, offered by 4 CIVIS European Universities (Sapienza Università di Roma, Université libre de Bruxelles, University of Bucharest and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), will delve into the different appraisals, strategies, abilities, and personality characteristics that generate a unique interaction in an open system of experience, as well as the allostatic response to it. Finally, the different techniques with empirical evidence that are available today to promote the optimal development of the individual, their mental health and wellbeing will be addressed.

Main topics addressed

  • Introduction to theories of emotions
  • Animal models of addictive behaviour: role of stress and negative emotions
  • The roots of stress and emotion regulation: inter-subjective matrix and attachment relationship
  • Post-Traumatic Stress: assessment, predictors and course
  • Psychophysiological response to stress with a focus on sleep disorders
  • The stress response in the absence of an actual stressor: intrusive thinking as a dysfunctional emotion regulation strategy
  • Emotion regulation and personality disorders
  • Emotion regulation in emotion-focused therapy
  • Interventions for facilitating emotion regulation
  • Emotion regulation: theoretical models
  • Mood, emotional and stress regulation techniques
