The UAM will build a pioneering residence for students and young researchers The UAM will build a pioneering residence for students and young researchers ============================================================================ 5 November 2026 The Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) is set to advance one of its strategic initiatives for attracting students and research talent through the construction of a 450-room university residence on the Cantoblanco Campus. The facility will primarily serve students, researchers and scientific staff participating in national and international mobility programmes. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/uam-campus.jpg)photo UAMWhat distinguishes the project is its strong focus on the research community. The residence will provide accommodation for doctoral candidates, predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, as well as visiting scholars, while remaining open to other university groups when appropriate. By developing this initiative, UAM aims to introduce a pioneering model within the Spanish university system, where affordable housing functions not only as student accommodation but also as a strategic tool for supporting research, scientific mobility and talent attraction. A residential model supporting research --------------------------------------- Integrated within the university campus, the residence is specifically designed to meet the needs of researchers at the early stages of their careers. Access to affordable accommodation has become an increasingly important factor in attracting both national and international talent. The new facility will facilitate the integration of young researchers into the university, improve mobility opportunities and provide suitable housing for those temporarily involved in UAM research projects and groups. The project includes approximately 450 rooms across more than 18,000 square metres, together with shared spaces intended to foster interaction, collaboration and community-building among residents. Beyond addressing accommodation needs, the residence is envisioned as a key component of the university’s scientific strategy. It will support the recruitment of national and international talent, strengthen participation in competitive research projects, encourage networking between early-career and established researchers, and promote innovation and knowledge-transfer communities. One more step towards affordable university housing --------------------------------------------------- The initiative aligns with a national protocol to promote affordable university accommodation. It also contributes to the objectives of the State Housing Plan 2026–2030, which seeks to expand the supply of affordable housing, support young people's independence and encourage the development of accommodation through public-private partnerships on public or institutional land. The project has secured significant support through a direct grant of €13.36 million from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda. With a total estimated investment of €31 million, the residence represents a major commitment to strengthening UAM’s capacity to attract, host and retain academic and research talent.
