The Restored Faculty of History Building Marks the Opening of the New Academic Year at the University of Bucharest The Restored Faculty of History Building Marks the Opening of the New Academic Year at the University of Bucharest ================================================================================================================== 15 October 2026 A restoration for both the future of education and the memory of the place. By bringing back to life the wing that houses its Faculty of History, the University of Bucharest marked an important milestone in the project to consolidate, restore, and modernise the University Palace - the largest educational building in the country. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/ub2_1.jpg)photo © UBFor the University of Bucharest, the first of October marked not only the opening of the academic year, but also the reopening of the restored wing housing the Faculty of History. After more than three years, students and faculty members returned to their premises in the University of Bucharest Palace. And it was the President of the country himself who welcomed them: > *The stake of this period in our society is to succeed in becoming a knowledge society, a society in which decisions are made based on the truths of science, a society in which citizens relate to society through truths that are recognised, in which citizens relate to their own health through medical knowledge, in which citizens relate to our past through historical research,”* said President Nicușor Dan. A historic building prepared for a new generation ------------------------------------------------- ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/ub3_1.jpg)photo © UBThe consolidation of the University Palace began in January 2023 and focused on strengthening the entire building, restoring its façades and historic decorative elements, rebuilding the roof, creating a museum space dedicated to the archaeological remains discovered in the inner courtyard, and installing a modern architectural lighting system. The project pursues a dual objective: on the one hand, to provide students with modern educational facilities and, on the other, to preserve and promote the building’s historical heritage. The Faculty of History wing, with a total floor area of 5,870 square metres, is the first completed segment of the project. It includes 20 rooms dedicated to teaching and study activities, as well as 50 additional spaces, including the library, offices, and administrative facilities. ![Prof. Dr Marian Preda, Rector of the University of Bucharest](https://civis.eu/storage/files/marian-preda_1.jpg) > This building does not belong only to the University of Bucharest. It is the building at Kilometre 0 of the capital, intrinsically linked to our history. The Faculty of History illustrates UB’s vision of combining tradition with modernity, through the spaces and technology we have here, but above all through the spirit of a European, strongly internationalised university. Prof. Dr Marian Preda, Rector of the University of Bucharest As part of the consolidation and restoration project, the University of Bucharest sought solutions to preserve the traces of the 1989 Revolution and the legacy of the University Square movement. The works focused on strengthening the building, safeguarding its historic features, and adapting the spaces to meet contemporary teaching, learning, and research needs. The Dean of the Faculty of History, Assoc. Prof. Matei Gheboianu, PhD, recalled the role of history beyond the university: *“History is not merely a story of the past; it shapes civic consciousness.”* In this context, he reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to preserving the place of history in pre-university education. The Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration offered a fitting conclusion to the day: *“A restored building looks to the past, while the university looks to the future.
