A Boost for International Exchange and Cooperation During CIVIS Staff Training in Tübingen A Boost for International Exchange and Cooperation During CIVIS Staff Training in Tübingen ============================================================================================ Learn 31 July 2026 *"What a week. Of Jointness. Togetherness. Vibration".* This was one participant's spontaneous summary after three inspiring days in Tübingen for a CIVIS Staff training. And it captures the spirit of the event better than any agenda could. The meeting, which welcomed participants from 14 universities across two continents and four university alliances, became a lively space where academic and professional staff shared ideas, challenged perspectives, and explored how universities can work together to create joint programmes that prepare students for a complex and global future. [*“Designing Competence-Oriented Joint Programmes”*](https://civis-agora.widening.eu/offering/48/34) took place in early July, addressing academic and administrative staff across CIVIS Alliance. The coordinators organised workshops and interactive sessions focused on competence-oriented curriculum design, future skills, and the practicalities of developing joint programmes across institutional and national borders. As competence based degree programmes enable students to adopt different perspectives, collaborate across disciplinary boundaries, and develop innovative solutions by applying the skills learned in their curricula. The approach, which places learners at the centre of the learning process, is essential for equipping graduates with the necessary skills to create innovative solutions to complex real world problems. In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world, students need subject specific knowledge as well as interdisciplinary and/ or transdisciplinary skills to shape the future. And joint programmes play a key role in fostering these competencies. During the three days, participants exchanged experiences, learned from one another's successes and challenges, and began shaping new collaborations that will continue long after the event. The aim was to deploy student centred curriculum development that prepares graduates for both the demands of the labour market and the responsibilities of active citizenship in a global society. > These were days of inspiring ideas, discussing experiences, finding new collaborations about how we will design competence-oriented joint programmes for a shared future together Martina Lorenz, co-coordinator of the staff training. Yet some of the week's most valuable moments happened between the sessions. Over coffee, during walks through Tübingen's historic streets, and aboard the city's iconic punting boats (Stocherkähne) on the River Neckar, conversations continued, ideas evolved, and professional contacts became genuine partnerships. ![](https://civis.eu/storage/files/tu1.jpg)Photo: Martina LorenzAs participants joked afterwards, it was hard to tell whether everyone was still buzzing from the inspiring discussions - or simply from the vibrations of the punting boat ride. Alliances as communities built on a shared goal ----------------------------------------------- The event highlighted what makes European Universities alliances such as CIVIS unique: they are not only platforms for cooperation but communities built on openness, trust, and a shared ambition to rethink higher education collectively. Bringing together colleagues with different expertise, institutional cultures, and perspectives created an environment in which innovation emerged naturally. The experience was so inspiring that one thing became clear before everyone had even left Tübingen: this type of meetings should continue.
