From Structure to Impact: Governance and Management for a Sustainable European University Alliance (Final Report on Management and Governance, CIVIS2, Deliverable D1.3) From Structure to Impact: Governance and Management for a Sustainable European University Alliance (Final Report on Management and Governance, CIVIS2, Deliverable D1.3) ======================================================================================================================================================================== - CIVIS Governance - European Universities initiative - Management - Deliverable - Report - Academics - Administrators - Policy makers Over four years, the Erasmus+ project CIVIS2 turned an ambitious idea, building the University of the Future, into a reality. Together, we established a functioning transnational European University Alliance. This final report shows how the management and governance structures of the Alliance connect 11 Full Members and 6 Associate Members. It also shows how this institutional architecture underpins concrete results across various CIVIS fields, from challenge-based education to research and civic engagement or mobility. One big achievement has been creating and maintaining bodies that can **transform ideas to output**, and this in different institutional and national contexts where we decide together. Find out more about the Alliances Governance and Management here: The impact of the Alliance structures reaches beyond the CIVIS bodies as such: the report documents changes to institutional procedures and practices inside member universities, and demonstrates how CIVIS mobilised resources and partnerships that go well beyond Erasmus+ funding. For example, the University of Bucharest has now a Faculty of Interdisciplinary studies and study programmes such as the three Master programmes [**TRACEE**](https://civis.eu/en/learn/find-your-master-s-programme/master-s-programme-in-transdisciplinary-studies-of-climate-environment-and-energy)**,** [**EUROSUD**](https://civis.eu/en/learn/find-your-master-s-programme/master-programme-in-south-european-studies-eurosud) and [**NAT4DD**](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom/nat4dd-new-civis-joint-master-s-programme-earns-aqas-accreditation) allowed administrations to change their procedures. Furthermore, the CIVIS Research Unit or the [**CIVIS Forum in Casablanca**](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom/facing-common-challenges-shaping-joint-solutions-for-africa-and-europe) were carried by Alliance Governance and Management, without being part of the Erasmus+ project as such. CIVIS has also become a voice in [**European policy debates**](https://civis.eu/en/the-civis-newsroom/facing-common-challenges-shaping-joint-solutions-for-africa-and-europe) and a testbed for the wider European Universities Initiative. CIVIS Officers and Head of Units are actively enagaging in European Discussions, for example on Quality Assurance or the European Degree Label. The report identifies challenges, mostly linked to the complexity of the endeavour of building an Alliance and translates that experience into **eight recommendations**, addressed towrads ourselves, Universities and European Unviersity Alliances in general, and policy-makers: ##### **For CIVIS** 1\. Govern as light as possible, as complex as necessary 4\. Translate governance priorities (top-down) via calls (bottom-up) ##### **For HEIs in Europe** 5\. Set priorities and use the alliances as strategic tools 6\. Sustain Alliance positions beyond project structures ##### **For decision-makers** 7\. Give transformation realistic time 8\. The headline finding is that upward trends clearly outweigh downward ones.
