This best practice guide talks about the importance of biodiversity on university campuses

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and rapid urbanization is driving the decline in biodiversity. University campuses (including those of colleges and high schools) can be important components of urban green spaces, particularly in developing countries, where private green spaces are often insufficient. In a university setting, biodiversity is not just a “list of species,” but rather the combination of how many and what kinds of species exist, how many types of habitats the campus offers, how well these are connected, and how intelligently buildings and infrastructure blend with natural spaces to support life and environmental education. This guide aims to support universities in protecting, conserving, and enhancing biodiversity on their campuses through an integrated approach based on assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring.
