Celebrating 160 years of UB and 330 years of higher education in Romania Celebrating 160 years of UB and 330 years of higher education in Romania ========================================================================== CIVIS Highlights 9 September 2024 Conferences, debates, book launches, guided tours, picnics and theatre plays, an educative treasure hunt, creative guitar workshops, as well as an anniversary stamp album were some of the highlights of the 160th anniversary of the University of Bucharest. The celebration lasted a whole week, also marking 330 years of higher education in the Romanian space. ![](/storage/files/foto8.jpg) ©UB The [**University of Bucharest**](https://unibuc.ro/?lang=en) was established in July 1864 by a Decree signed by ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Successor of the higher education structures inaugurated by the Princely Academy (1694), the University of Bucharest has been decisively contributed to the development and modernizing of Romanian education, science and culture. The series of events marking the celebration debuted at the Bucharest National Opera. The scene here turned into an educative interconnection space and cultural and trans-generational dialogue in which the past, present and future of Romanian higher education became sources of reflection, debates, and academic visioning. The members of the UB community and its guests also participated to guided tours in important memory places of Bucharest, the Museum of the University of Bucharest and the Botanical Museum, as well as to an official reception at the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden of UB. ![](/storage/files/foto4.jpg) ©UB ![](/storage/files/foto6.jpg) ©UB True to its permanent preoccupation to promote the great national cultural values, Romfilatelia was invited to mark the event by launching a stamp album. Within it, in the images reproduced on the stamps included the portraits of the most remarkable personalities of the institution, among which that of its founder, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, and its architect, Alexandru Orăscu. *The University of Bucharest: 1864 - 2024,* a new and revised edition of the anniversary volume printed a decade ago, has also been launched with this ocassion. When fun meets knowledge ------------------------ *Come at the treasure hunt and discover the 160 years story of university history in a fun way*, was the challenge for the UB community to find out, in a unique way, the history of the Palace of the University of Bucharest, designed by architect Alexandru Orăscu. The closing event of the Celebration Week took place in the picnic area of the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden. The participants had the chance to get insight into the mysteries of complex sciences such as biology, physics, ecology, geography, psychology and education sciences, from teaching staff, researchers and students of UB. The theatre play *The last night of love, the first night of war* by Camil Petrescu, draw all the public's attention and applause. ![](/storage/files/foto91.jpg) ©UB A live DJ set, financial education lessons, prize contests, a photo corner, a time capsule and an inspiration messages wall were also set up for the participants. Free acces to beauty and art ---------------------------- On this anniversary, the University of Bucharest offered 2 days free access to the spaces of the Dimitrie Brandza Botanical Garden and invited nature lovers to discover the over 3.500 plants it fosters. Also, Art Safari - the largest event dedicated to art in Romania - offered 1 day of free access to all students of the University of Bucharest at the exhibitions in the series Mysteries and treasures. Thus, UB art lovers could explore the Dacia-Romania Palace and discover the exhibitions *The history of Romania in 100 portraits, The gold in Brukenthal, The secret museum, Eustațiu Stoenescu - the portrait of aristocracy* and the *Pangratti workshops.* About the UB ------------ Comprising 19 faculties, with 95 bachelor programs, 223 master’s programs, 23 doctoral schools on specific fields and an interdisciplinary doctoral school, over 50 centers and 9 research facilities, the University of Bucharest has established itself as an institution dedicated to achieving excellence in education and research, whose priority is preparing its students for life and professional activity.
